BHP Billiton Group will sell the Cambalda nickel beneficiation plant and supporting land in Western Australia to Jintian Limited. The transaction amount was not disclosed. BHP Billiton issued a statement on Wednesday saying that Jintian will “evaluate the long-term use of this mineral processing plant.” The deal includes mining leases and mining rights. Affected by the global oversupply of nickel and a sharp drop in prices, BHP Billiton shut down the Kambalda beneficiation plant in mid-2024 and simultaneously suspended the operation of the entire Western Australian nickel business. BHP Billiton said the company is still evaluating the overall nickel business; a resolution on the disposal of remaining assets, such as the nickel refinery, smelter and two large mines, is expected to be issued in February 2027. Driven by a massive increase in battery metal production in Indonesia, the world's largest mining group already charged $2.5 billion in impairment losses on its nickel assets in 2024. Jintian has been searching for gold infrastructure and mining assets in the region. The company is currently considering launching a second round of takeover offers for Polaris Resources. Polaris holds several large-scale gold projects near Kambalda.
