What Kering Investors Missed Before The Fall
Share
Listen to the news

If you only skimmed the headlines about Kering’s multi-year reset and Gucci’s creative overhaul, it might have sounded like a long-term opportunity rather than a painful wait. For Kering shareholders, the loss over the past year was 29.9%, including dividends. If you had been weighing a buy decision in early October 2025, what warning signs in the business were already visible before this slump played out?

A Narrative on Simply Wall St is one investor's written case for a company, with its growth, margin and multiple assumptions spelled out. Those assumptions imply an estimated Fair Value.

Kering has already moved. See which of 185 high quality undervalued stocks still trade below our estimates.

The Two Kering Stories Investors Were Really Pricing In

The shares cost €292 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at Kering then had to decide which future felt more believable.

On the optimistic side, the bullish Narrative put Fair Value at €360, with the idea that Gucci’s creative refresh and faster product cycles could restore sales momentum and support a stronger margin profile for the group.

The more cautious Narrative set Fair Value at €208, assuming only 3.3% annual revenue growth and warning that ongoing brand weakness and tourism headwinds could keep profit margins capped near 7.8%.

What The Results Changed In The Kering Debate

Kering’s H1 2026 figures hit the optimistic case hardest. Revenue moved from €7,439m to €7,220m, while net income excluding extra items went from €429m to €136m. Net margin fell from 5.8% to 1.9%. That step down in profitability challenged the idea that a reset would quickly rebuild earnings power, so the evidence leaned toward the cautious narrative.

The real lesson is simple. When a thesis hangs on margin repair, track net margin and absolute profit in each half year, not just sales trends or headline plans.

What Kering’s Lower Price Now Asks You To Believe

Kering trades at €214 today after a 29.9% loss over the past year, and the selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits above the current price based on its own framework, not on hard fact.

That view leans heavily on the idea that store optimisation, cost control and digital investment can rebuild earnings power, so any buyer is really judging whether sustained margin repair is achievable.

"Kering's store network optimization, closing underperforming locations and focusing on higher-quality, experiential retail, supports improved brand positioning, enables stronger pricing power, and is likely to increase gross margins and operating leverage over time. The ramp-up of new product launches, revitalization of carryover lines, and accelerated time-to-market at Gucci and other key brands are aimed at regaining consumer demand, thereby supporting a future recovery in top-line revenue growth and gross margin expansion."
