Did SoFi Technologies Fall Catch You Out? What Investors Missed
Share
Listen to the news

SoFi Technologies just delivered record Q2 figures, with revenue and profit both higher than a year earlier, yet the share chart tells a very different story. Investors who held SoFi Technologies over the past year are down 44.0%, including dividends. If you had backed the bullish July 2025 view that digital banking and AI could justify a higher valuation, how did that confident thesis square with the warning flags already on record?

The Argument Investors Had To Weigh On SoFi Technologies

Shares in SoFi Technologies cost US$26.36 at the start of the period, and investors were effectively choosing between a high-conviction tech story and a more restrained banking thesis.

The bullish view saw a Fair Value of US$30, a notional target based on its own assumptions, anchored in digital banking and AI. It relied on the idea that revenue could grow 27.7% a year and profit margins might rise from 18.5% to 24.8% by 2028.

The more cautious Narrative put Fair Value at US$21.28 and treated digital transformation as helpful but patchy. That stance assumed 19.3% annual revenue growth, only a small margin lift to 18.6%, and flagged competition and regulation as key threats.

What The Results Changed For The SoFi Technologies Debate

SoFi Technologies rolled out record Q2 2026 figures, with revenue at US$1.20b and net income at US$156.6m, alongside a higher 13.0% net margin versus 11.5% a year earlier. That outcome leaned toward the bullish case that talked up digital banking, AI and stronger profitability, although the stock slide and ongoing scrutiny around credit risk and regulation meant the evidence still cut both ways.

The key assumption this period exposed was not just growth, but the quality of that growth. When you judge another fintech or bank, track whether rising revenue is coming with healthier net margins and product traction, rather than treating the top line alone as proof that an optimistic thesis is playing out.

What You Would Be Paying For In SoFi Technologies Today

SoFi Technologies now trades at US$15.76. The selected bullish Narrative places its Fair Value above that level, arguing the market still treats the group too much like a traditional lender rather than a broader fintech platform.

The argument leans on SoFi as a consumer super-app plus a banking software provider. A buyer today would need to believe that this dual-engine model can scale without eroding credit standards or technology economics.

"SoFi Technologies (NASDAQ: SOFI) has fundamentally solved this. Currently trading around $18.90 per share (as of March 2026), the broader stock market is incorrectly pricing SoFi as just another traditional, vulnerable bank. In reality, SoFi is a "financial super-app" for consumers, while simultaneously building the background technology that powers other financial companies."
