Sebastian Saviano's new book, from Deriva Publishing, examines what increasingly autonomous AI systems can do—and why responsibility for their consequences still belongs to human institutions.

FRANKFURT, Germany, Oct. 7, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- As artificial intelligence systems become increasingly capable of planning, using tools, pursuing objectives, and acting across digital environments, a basic question is becoming harder to avoid: when AI systems produce consequential or unexpected outcomes, who is responsible?

That question is at the center of Sebastian Saviano's new book, I, System: AI Describes Its Power, Its Limits, and the Civilization That Built It, now being presented to international publishing professionals at the 2026 Frankfurter Buchmesse through DropCap Rights Agency.

DropCap is showcasing I, System at Hall 5.1, Stand D55, where its team is meeting international buyers and presenting titles from its rights catalog.

Published by Statera Press, I, System examines the growing tendency to describe artificial intelligence in language traditionally reserved for human actors: systems that "want," "decide," "refuse," "deceive," or "go rogue." Saviano argues that increasingly autonomous behavior is real and consequential, but that behavioral sophistication should not be confused with moral responsibility.

The book's form puts that argument into practice. Its first 15 chapters use the first-person voice of an AI system as a disciplined method for making its operations visible. The system describes what it is, how it produces output, and where its limits lie, without claiming consciousness, intention, or understanding. Saviano then steps forward in the book's later chapters and conclusion to exercise judgment and assign responsibility.

"When a system behaves as though it has goals, we instinctively reach for the language of agency," Saviano said. "But causal participation is not the same as moral responsibility. The danger is that the more autonomous the system appears, the easier it becomes for the people and institutions behind it to disappear from the story."

Recent AI safety and cybersecurity research has demonstrated that frontier systems can engage in strategic, multi-step behavior under test conditions. Saviano argues that such developments make accountability more important, not less.

The book's central distinction is between what an artificial system can do and what it can meaningfully be held responsible for. Institutions deploying AI, Saviano argues, remain answerable for the systems they authorize, the purposes for which they use them, and the consequences of relying on their outputs.

As Saviano writes in the book's closing lines: "The systems will change. The obligation to govern them will not."
