If you only glanced at Bodycote’s latest half year update, a small rise in net margin from 7.5% to 8.1% on modestly higher revenue might not sound dramatic. For Bodycote shareholders, the return over the past year was 37.7%, including dividends. That is a strong outcome off fairly ordinary looking numbers. If you had been deciding whether to buy on 7 October 2025, what exactly made that tradeable and what remained pure risk?
On Simply Wall St, a Narrative is an investor's thesis written down: the reasoning, plus the numbers it rests on. Run those numbers and you get an estimated Fair Value.

The shares cost £6.62 at the start of the period, and Bodycote sat between two very different readings of the same set of facts.
The bullish Narrative put Fair Value at £7.41, 12% above the start price. It leaned on US aerospace and defense projects, plus Industry 4.0 treatments like HIP and vacuum services, as potential drivers of higher pricing power and wider margins.
The bearish Narrative set Fair Value at £6.1, 8% below the start price. It focused on supply chain localization and stricter environmental rules as threats to revenue and costs, even if efficiency programs progressed.
Bodycote reported revenue of £369 million in H1 2025 and £381.2 million in H1 2026, with net income rising from £27.7 million to £31 million and net margin lifting from 7.5% to 8.1%. That pattern supported the optimistic case that higher value work could improve profitability, although the size of the move meant the cautious view on execution risk remained valid. The evidence pointed in both directions.
The useful takeaway is simple. When a story rests on better pricing power and mix, you test it against net income and margin, not just sales. Then you ask whether the size of the shift is large enough to justify the original Fair Value gap under consideration.
Bodycote now trades at £9.11, up sharply over the past year, while the selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits below that level. The view behind that figure leans on concerns about supply chain reshoring, tougher environmental rules and shifts in manufacturing technology pressuring future cash flows.
A buyer today is effectively assuming that margin gains and capital allocation will offset those industry headwinds. The key question is how the selected Narrative’s worries about localization, regulation and competition might intersect with that profitability story over time.
"Stricter environmental regulations and increasing carbon pricing will directly raise operating costs in Bodycote's energy-intensive operations, and failure to rapidly decarbonize as required for compliance and customer contracts could result in margin compression and potential loss of business, threatening both net margins and long-term earnings."

Bodycote focuses on treating metal so critical parts keep working longer. Your attention naturally sticks to turbines, engines and aerospace hardware.
Look one layer over and a different bottleneck appears. AI facilities, banking platforms and online gaming lean on dense computing gear that runs hot.
Another business concentrates on the power and cooling systems that keep those servers alive. It designs thermal infrastructure so racks can run harder without burning out.
As demand for heavier computing grows, attention shifts again. How much value could move toward the companies that keep digital infrastructure switched on.
