The Zhitong Finance App learned that Pfizer (PFE.US) announced on Wednesday that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved its tyrosine kinase inhibitor Tukysa (tucatinib) as part of a combined treatment plan for first-line maintenance treatment of certain types of breast cancer.

The approval allows TukYSA to be used in adult patients with HER2 positive (HER2+) breast cancer receiving trastuzumab and pertuzumab induction therapy. Trastuzumab and pertuzumab are two anti-cancer drugs sold by Roche (RHHBY.US) under the Hercetin and Pataget brands, respectively.

The decision was supported by Pfizer HER2CLIMB-05 phase III trial data. In this trial, when TukYSA was used in combination with trastuzumab and pertuzumab in patients with HER2 positive metastatic breast cancer (MBC), the main end point of progression-free survival was achieved, and safety was good.

This oral medication has previously been approved in the US as a follow-up treatment option for adult patients with advanced HER2-positive unresectable or metastatic breast cancer, and can be used in combination with chemotherapy, capecitabine, and trastuzumab.

Pfizer closed up 1.8% on Wednesday and has accumulated an increase of 18% so far this year.
