If you had backed LG Display for its OLED pivot and premium screen exposure, the outcome would have been painful. Holding LG Display over the past year would have meant a 43.4% loss, including dividends. If that decision rested on expectations of rising margins, stronger free cash flow, and a higher-quality revenue mix, how much of that original thesis failed to account for the later swing from a sizeable Q2 2025 profit to a loss by Q2 2026?
A Narrative on Simply Wall St is one investor's written case for a company, with its growth, margin and multiple assumptions spelled out. Those assumptions imply an estimated Fair Value.
The easy part of this move is behind LG Display. Zero in on 185 high quality undervalued stocks for companies trading below our estimates.
The shares cost ₩14,660 at the start, and anyone looking at LG Display then had to choose between two very different stories that both sounded reasonable.
On the bullish side, the narrative pinned Fair Value at ₩17,000 and focused on OLED, AR/VR and IoT demand. Supporters expected an OLED-centric model to lift margins and earnings, supported by balance sheet effects from the Guangzhou LCD plant sale.
The bearish view set Fair Value at ₩12,195 and still accepted the OLED shift but highlighted potential pressure points. That camp pointed to heavy OLED investment needs, rising competition from Chinese panel makers, and revenue growth assumptions of a 0.6% decline a year.
The clearest new fact for LG Display holders was the swing in profitability. Net income moved from a profit of ₩865,812 million in Q2 2025 to a loss of ₩404,641 million in Q2 2026, while sales stayed around ₩5.6b. Net margin shifted from 15.5% to a -7.2% loss, which challenged both the bullish and cautious profit stories.
The lesson here is simple. When a thesis leans on higher margins, you track net margin and absolute profit each reporting season and test whether they move in the forecast direction.
LG Display trades at ₩8,250 today after falling 43.4% over the past year. The selected Narrative places Fair Value above that price and ties the gap to how far OLED focused products, factory AI and premium customers can reshape earnings quality.
The key assumption a buyer must weigh is that OLED led production, AI driven efficiency and mix upgrades can sustain meaningfully stronger profitability than recent results.
"Some analysts expect LG Display to translate its OLED centric product mix, cost initiatives and premium customer focus into higher margins, more resilient earnings and further share gains in high end display categories. The main requirement is that LG Display continues to execute on OLED technology and cost leadership while carefully pacing new capacity and workforce restructuring so profitability improvements in core operations are sustained."
