SET steps up as "transition enabler" to help Thai firms cut emissions, access
green finance
KEY POINTS

drive Thai businesses toward a low-carbon economy through the development tools
and mechanisms. These include a carbon credit auction system under the Low
Carbon Cities and Carbon Market Development project - expected to launch by 2027
- and the SETCarbon Platform, which enables businesses to systematically manage
greenhouse gas data, enhance data credibility, and effectively develop
transition plans.
- In collaboration with Singapore Management University (SMU), SET co-hosted the
Climate Finance Forum, where panelists proposed the integration of public
policies, financial incentives, funding mechanisms, and climate data to
accelerate the shift to net-zero emissions to accelerate the transition and
achieve net-zero targets, while strengthening resilience against future climate
uncertainties.
BANGKOK, October 8, 2026 - The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) is expanding its
role as "transition enabler" supporting Thai businesses in their transition
towards a low-carbon economy through the development of tools and mechanisms.
These include a carbon credit auction system to support the development of the
carbon market, which is expected to launch auctions in 2027, and the SETCarbon
Platform, a greenhouse gas emissions data management platform designed to
enhance the quality and credibility of businesses' sustainability and greenhouse
gas data. In addition, SET and Singapore Management University (SMU) co-hosted
the Climate Finance Forum under Bangkok Climate Action Week 2026 on October 8
for knowledge exchange, strengthened cross-sector collaboration, and supported
the development of Thailand's climate finance ecosystem.
SET Senior Executive Vice President - Chief Strategy & Finance Officer (CSFO)
Benjarong Suwankiri said: " SET's role will no longer be limited to serving as a
'capital-raising platform,' but has expanded to becoming a 'transition enabler'
that supports businesses in transitioning systematically, while strengthening
their resilience in managing and responding to climate uncertainties. SET has
continuously supported the development of Thailand's climate finance ecosystem,
including enhancing the credibility of sustainability data, promoting reporting
and disclosure in accordance with regulatory requirements, and supporting
developers of greenhouse gas reduction projects. These efforts aim to strengthen
confidence among investors and stakeholders across all sectors, in line with
SET's vision, 'The Trusted Gateway to Inclusive Opportunities.'"
One example is the support for the development of the carbon market through the
Low Carbon Cities and Carbon Market Development project, with financial support
from the World Bank. The project represents an important example of how climate
finance mechanisms can be applied in Thailand. It supports buildings under the
Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) in improving energy efficiency. The
resulting greenhouse gas emissions reductions will be registered as carbon
credits and auctioned through SET's system, with auctions expected to launch in
2027. Proceeds from the sales will provide additional funding to support the
continued implementation of projects addressing climate change.
Another example is SET's support for businesses in accessing green finance,
including loans and the issuance of sustainability bonds. SET provides the
necessary infrastructure to support such financing, including continuously
enhanced ESG data infrastructure and the SETCarbon Platform, which helps
businesses manage greenhouse gas emissions data. These are important foundations
for financial institutions and lenders in assessing and allocating capital. In
addition, SET has collaborated with relevant agencies, including the Department
of Climate Change and Environment, the Bank of Thailand, and the Securities and
Exchange Commission (SEC), to develop the Thailand Taxonomy, which classifies
economic activities according to their alignment with climate objectives. This
helps businesses and financial institutions assess their own and their clients'
environmental performance and management, supporting transition planning, access
to finance, and risk management.
At the Climate Finance Forum, panelists proposed the integration of public
policies, financial incentives, funding mechanisms, and climate-related data,
alongside building knowledge and capacity. Such an integrated approach would
help accelerate the transition towards a low-carbon economy, support the
achievement of net-zero targets, and enable Thailand to respond more effectively
and tangibly to future climate-related uncertainties.
