Known as the "Pulitzer of Education Innovation," the Yass Prize has recognized Valor for its commitment to a sustainable, transformational, outstanding, and permissionless approach to educating the whole person.

AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 8, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Valor Education has been named a Yass Prize Finalist and awarded $500,000. At the Power of Innovation Summit in Philadelphia, Valor was recognized by Jeff and Janine Yass as "Outstanding" for the rapid growth of its classical charter schools, which now serve 5,000 students across five campuses in Austin and San Antonio. Out of thousands of applicants for the Yass Prize, Valor was named as one of eight finalists for its distinctive culture, excellent curriculum, and exceptionally strong demand from families.

Since 2021, the Yass Prize has awarded more than $84 million to more than 285 organizations serving more than 14 million students and families.

Valor's liberal arts education provides every student an encounter with the great books within an intentional and joyful student culture. The prize money will help accelerate Valor's growth plan, which includes opening hundreds of new seats in Austin as well as a major expansion into the Dallas-Ft. Worth region.

"Valor stands out for the depth of the educational experience and the extraordinary scale of family demand," noted the Yass Prize press release. "This is not classical education reserved for an elite few, but a tuition-free public-school network with rigorous teacher formation and the ability to create hundreds of new seats while preserving a culture centered on wonder, humility, friendship and human dignity."

VALOR'S ORIGIN & SUCCESS

Valor opened its first school in South Austin in 2018 with 450 students, and has since opened schools in North Austin, Kyle, Leander, and San Antonio, which collectively serve 5,000 students. With an educational model rooted in wisdom and wonder, Valor provides a tuition-free education for students of all backgrounds and abilities.

Valor's student retention is nearly 90 percent, and family satisfaction has been higher than 90 percent each year since opening. Demand for Valor's rich classical education continues to increase, and Valor's waitlist has exceeded seat count every year of its existence. This past year, more than 6,000 students were on the waiting list for less than 600 available seats.

"We're incredibly grateful for the recognition from the Yass Prize," said Stephen Gordon, Superintendent of Schools. "This honor is ultimately a reflection of our incredible teachers. Each day, our teachers cultivate a place of learning that is joyful, rigorous, personal, and fueled by wonder. Families keep choosing Valor because they see the difference that comes from teachers who are drawing on a mission and vision rooted in the fundamental dignity of every child."

VALOR'S NEXT PHASE OF GROWTH

With the $500,000 award from the Yass Prize, Valor will be able to launch next-phase construction projects on existing schools in the Austin area and begin a significant expansion to Dallas-Ft. Worth. This regional expansion, led by Executive Vice President Jesse Bates, will eventually include five additional campuses capable of serving 5,000 students in North Texas.

"For years, families have been asking us when we're coming to Dallas-Ft. Worth," said Mr. Bates. "They know that Valor provides an exceptional education, grounded in the liberal arts and great books, aimed at developing wisdom, virtue, and friendship. We are incredibly excited for this opportunity to bring a Valor education to children and families in North Texas."

In addition to bringing its charter schools into North Texas, Valor also hopes to expand its Valor Institute for Studies in Person and Community to Irving, Texas, in partnership with the University of Dallas. With a home on the University's campus, the Valor Institute would significantly develop its academic programming, which it offers in partnership with professors from across the country.

To date, the Valor Institute has hosted more than 150 academic events with professors including Wilfred McClay, Matthew Walz, Glenn Arbery, and D. C. Schindler, exploring works of literature, poetry, drama, philosophy, history, and theology.

"The award from Yass is a powerful confirmation of Valor's educational entrepreneurship," said David Williams, Valor's President and CEO. "We started Valor with a desire to renew wonder — to re-ignite education as a search for answers to man's deepest questions. We are excited to grow our charter schools, grow our academic institute — and even explore private school models that take advantage of Texas's Education Freedom Accounts."
