Three sectors are higher and eight are lower in Thursday’s regular session, with the top three split across cyclical, defensive and growth groups. The leaders are separated rather than clustered, with Energy clearly ahead of the next sectors in the ranking.

The 4.72-point spread between Energy and Health Care is more than four times the largest move among the major averages, which are down between 0.24% and 0.87%. Those index losses mask a session where leadership is concentrated in Energy and Consumer Staples. Defensives are not holding up better — Utilities sits fourth from the bottom and Health Care is last — so the selling looks broad rather than rotational.
