Why Soitec Is Up 235% Even Though It Swung To A Loss
Share
Listen to the news

Soitec’s recent update that Q2 2027 Photonics SOI revenue is now expected to be about three times the prior year, with multi year capacity reservation agreements close to signing, gave investors a fresh concrete datapoint on how AI data center demand is feeding into actual orders. For Soitec shareholders, the return over the past year was 234.9%, including dividends. If you were weighing a purchase back in October 2025, what conviction about future wafers and margins would have felt reasonable before any of this was on the tape?

This theme extends beyond Soitec. See which of 91 AI infrastructure stocks may still merit a closer look.

The Two Soitec Stories Investors Had To Weigh

The shares cost €44.29 at the start of the period, which put Soitec in the middle of an argument about how powerful AI and 5G would really be for its substrates business.

On the bullish side, a Fair Value of €51.28, treated as the price implied by optimistic assumptions, rested on revenue growth of 1.1% a year and a 10.4% profit margin, helped by AI and wireless demand plus tighter cost control.

The cautious Narrative pointed to a Fair Value of €32 that assumed commoditization risk, ongoing SOI pricing pressure, and revenue falling 1.7% a year as margins declined to 7.9%.

What The Evidence Did To The Soitec Argument

Soitec’s upgraded view that Q2 2027 Photonics SOI revenue should be about three times Q2 2026, backed by planned multi year capacity reservations and AI data center demand, clearly leaned toward the optimistic case about wafers. At the same time, H2 2026 results showed revenue lower than H2 2025, a swing from €77.653m profit to a €155.247m loss, and net margin falling to a 42.9% loss. Overall, the evidence cut both ways.

The lesson is simple. When a thesis leans on higher volume and fatter margins, check whether contract wins and guidance sit alongside reported profit and net margin, not just headline demand stories.

What Soitec’s New Price Already Assumes

With Soitec now at €152, the selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits below the current price and frames the recent 234.9% one year gain as rich against its own assumptions.

The Narrative leans on risks around commoditization, substitutes like GaN and SiC, and customer concentration. A buyer today is effectively assuming that photonics, SmartSiC and broader AI substrate demand scale cleanly. The question is how that squares with possible margin pressure and delayed product ramps described below.

"The persistent risk of SOI technology commoditization and the rise of lower-cost alternatives threaten Soitec's pricing power, which could cause prolonged margin compression and limit future earnings expansion as new entrants and adjacent technologies scale up. Heightened geopolitical protectionism and ongoing supply chain fragmentation are increasing operational complexity and may further restrict Soitec's access to key growth markets in China and the US, capping revenue growth and potentially leading to underutilized capacity."
