The Zhitong Finance App learned that on October 12, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEx) announced that it has cooperated with leading index provider S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P Dow Jones Indices) to develop and launch the “S&P 500 Hong Kong Exchange Technology 100 Index” to provide the market with a cross-market index combining leading US listed companies and the largest technology companies listed in Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong stock market continues to expand and attract more technology and innovation-driven companies. At the same time, investors are looking at the global market to diversify their investments and seek new opportunities, driving a significant increase in market demand for flexible global investment solutions.
In this context, the S&P 500 HKEx Technology 100 Index tracks the performance of the two markets simultaneously through a single benchmark, combining the growth potential of Hong Kong technology and innovation companies with the size and diversity of the US large stock market, allowing investors to more widely allocate different regions, industries and growth sources. About 60% of the index is allocated to the HKEx Technology 100 Index and 40% is allocated to the S&P 500 Index, and the weights are adjusted quarterly.
Yu Xueqin, head of marketing at the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, said, “Innovative elements have become an important driving force for companies to achieve growth and investors to seize opportunities. We are very happy to launch this index in partnership with S&P Dow Jones Indices, while tracking Hong Kong's booming technology and innovation ecosystem, and the US large stock market, bringing together the complementary advantages of the two places to provide investors with a convenient new way to invest across markets. HKEx will continue to strive to expand index products and develop innovative solutions to support the sustainable development of the market.”
Robert Ross, Chief Commercial Officer of S&P Dow Jones Indices, said, “The Hong Kong tech ecosystem is growing rapidly, and investors are looking for growth opportunities from a more global perspective. These trends are driving market demand for innovative benchmark indices. We are excited to work with HKEx to develop the S&P 500 HKEx Technology 100 Index, which brings together Hong Kong's dynamic technology industry and leading US large companies in a single, transparent benchmark index. This collaboration shows how index innovation can connect the strengths and opportunities of different markets through a unified and rules-based framework.”
Specifically, the S&P 500 HKEx Technology 100 Index was launched on September 30, 2026 to support ETFs that track the relevant indices in the future to be eligible for inclusion in Hong Kong Stock Connect transactions. The HKEx Technology 100 Index was launched in December 2025 to reflect the performance of the top 100 securities of Hong Kong listed companies with market capitalization that are highly related to the six major technology fields of artificial intelligence, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, electric vehicles and intelligent driving, information technology, the Internet and robotics.
The S&P 500 index covers 500 leading US companies, accounting for about 85% of the total market value of the US investable stock market.
