What Ericsson Shareholders Got Right
Share
Listen to the news

If you were weighing Ericsson in October 2025, the puzzle was already clear. For Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson shareholders, the return over the past year was 24.9%, including dividends. That outcome now sits beside a split analyst view that ranged from SEK56 on the bear side to SEK99 on the bull side, as well as fresh headlines about CEO succession, rural 5G deals, buybacks, and weaker margins. If you had to choose again, which of those signals would matter most today?

The useful thing about a Narrative is that the reasoning is checkable: the assumptions sit beside the argument, and together they imply an estimated Fair Value you can disagree with.

The Argument You Would Have Been Weighing Up On Ericsson

The shares cost SEK79.3 at the start of the period, and investors in Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson were being asked to choose between two sharply different stories.

On the optimistic side, the bull narrative put Fair Value at SEK100 and leaned on global digitization and rural broadband. It assumed revenue could grow 3.1% a year with profit margins rising from 7.0% to 8.6% by 2028.

The bear narrative pointed to US China strains and tariff costs, with Fair Value at SEK56. It assumed revenue would decline 2.5% a year and margins would compress from 7.0% to 6.2% by 2028.

What The Results And News Tested For Ericsson

The Q2 2026 report showed Ericsson with revenue at SEK52,691 million and net income at SEK4,046 million, with net margin slipping from 8.1% to 7.7%. New 5G and private network wins in Canada and rural Kansas, along with AI RAN trials with T-Mobile, supported an optimistic demand outlook, while weaker sales and margin pressure supported a more cautious view. Overall, the evidence pointed in both directions.

The key assumption investors needed to track was profitable 5G and AI uptake. For any similar telecom stock, it can be helpful to check whether new contracts and product launches are reflected in higher absolute profit and a firmer net margin, rather than only in headlines.

What Today's Ericsson Price Already Assumes

Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson trades at SEK94.4 today, with this Narrative’s Fair Value sitting below that level. The story now hinges less on broad 5G optimism and more on whether higher component costs and loss making enterprise operations keep eating into profitability.

A buyer at today’s price is effectively assuming Ericsson can hold strong group and Networks margins while turning enterprise exposure into a profitable growth engine. The open question is how rising semiconductor costs and slower scaling in areas like network APIs affect that assumption.

"Rising semiconductor and memory input costs linked to AI related demand are already feeding into Ericsson’s cost base and are expected to build further in coming quarters, which could overwhelm recent margin resilience and compress group and Networks profitability as existing contracts roll through earnings."
