12:22 PM EDT, 10/13/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The German government is considering imposing an annual levy on households to help finance a proposed national emergency gas reserve, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing a draft bill it saw. The proposed reserve, which will hold 24 terawatt-hours of gas, is intended to provide Germany with additional gas volumes that can be used in the event of extreme emergency situations such as sabotage or critical infrastructure failures, according to the report. It is expected to cost up to 3.08 billion euros over the first 10 years. The levy is estimated to be between 3.77 euros and 7.20 euros per year for a typical household, with the charge set to commence Oct. 1, 2027. Germany's economy ministry did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment. (Market Chatter news is derived from conversations with market professionals globally.
