According to Woofun AI, Getty Images officially filed for bankruptcy and became a private enterprise. This landmark event revealed the devastating impact of artificial intelligence imaging tools on traditional media asset valuations. Despite the continuation of the company's operations, public shareholders are at risk of zero investment, and the imaging giant, which was once valued at several billion dollars, has completely failed in the midst of technological changes.
Deterioration in financial fundamentals was the last straw to crush the camels. Getty Images has 30 years of industry experience, but quickly fell into a quagmire after returning to the stock market in 2022 at a valuation of around $4.8 billion. The heavy debt burden left it burdened it with $2.1 billion, and quarterly interest expenses surged 57% over the course of a year. On the business side, the Creative sector, which is directly impacted by artificial intelligence image generation tools, performed poorly. In 2025, sales increased only slightly by 0.7%, and the number of annual subscribers fell by 11.4%.
According to data compiled by Woofun AI, the company's overall sales contracted by 2.5% by the second quarter of 2026. Management bluntly stated in the annual report that customers are moving to AI-generated content that does not require traditional licensing mechanisms, and this structural replacement trend is irreversible.
Strategic mistakes and legal woes further hastened the company's collapse. In 2022, Getty went public through a merger with SPAC and had planned to acquire competitor Shutterstock (SSTK.US) for $3.7 billion to break through.
However, the UK competition authority asked Shutterstock (SSTK.US) to divest all of its news image business, causing Getty to abandon the deal in July. This move not only missed an opportunity for restructuring, but also cost around $60.4 million in transaction costs.
Meanwhile, copyright lawsuits have been hit hard, and in November 2025, the British High Court dismissed its core copyright claims against Stability AI and Stable Diffusion tools. The funding chain broke down, and investors with 2022 listed share options won the lawsuit, forcing Getty to pay $119 million in damages and interest last quarter. As of June 30, the company had only $51.6 million in cash reserves, and its ability to continue operating is facing significant uncertainty.
The restructuring plan was ultimately led by the Getty family and Koch Equity Development. The two parties invested up to $533 million in exchange for 100% equity, and the bondholders also agreed to repurchase the $270 million bond. The market reacted violently. According to Yahoo Finance data, Getty stock fell to $0.0147 on October 12, a sharp drop of 68% in a single day. Analyst Bull Theory points out that the cumulative decline in Getty's stock price over the past four years has reached 99.95% due to AI destroying its original business model.
Despite going through bankruptcy and restructuring, Getty continues to generate revenue through licensing images to train AI models. This transformation strategy is highly consistent with Shutterstock's (SSTK.US) partnership path with OpenAI in 2023, marking a reorganization of the identity of traditional image libraries into AI data vendors.
