Why Upstart Fell 53% Even As Profit Rose
Share
Listen to the news

If you backed Upstart for its AI lending edge and expanding HELOC offering, the payoff over this specific stretch was harsh. For Upstart shareholders, the loss over the past year was 52.7%, including dividends. If you were weighing an investment on 13 October 2025, you had bullish analysts assuming rapid revenue growth, rising margins and a much higher future P/E. What exactly did that upbeat case miss about model risk, regulation and funding reliance?

This theme extends beyond Upstart. See which of 38 AI small caps may still merit a closer look.

The Argument Upstart Investors Were Really Having

The shares cost US$49.6 at the start of the period, and Upstart was being pulled between two very different stories about where its AI lending model could realistically take the business.

On the optimistic side, one narrative saw fair value at US$80.85. This price was implied by expectations that Model 19 and HELOC expansion would support revenue growth of 27.2% and profit margins reaching 18.5% within three years.

The cautious view anchored on a fair value of US$40.17. This was based on assumptions of 23.5% revenue growth while focusing on risks from tighter data privacy rules and heavier AI regulation that could pressure model accuracy and compliance costs.

What The Results Changed For The Upstart Debate

Upstart’s later rollout of Model 22 became a legal flashpoint when a securities class action accused management of overstating that model’s approval rates and revenue potential, which directly challenged the earlier bullish confidence in AI accuracy. At the same time, Q2 2026 results showed revenue at US$377.2 million and net income at US$16.5 million, with net margin at 4.4%. Taken together, the evidence cut both ways.

The episode turns on one assumption investors often gloss over: how robust a lender’s AI claims look once regulators, court filings and audited margins are on the table. For a different stock, track any gap between promised model benefits and later disclosure in lawsuits, enforcement releases and the trend in net margin.

What You Are Paying For In Upstart Today

Upstart now trades at US$23.83, with the selected Narrative’s Fair Value sitting above that level based on its own modelling. The focus is on AI underwriting, funding access and HELOC growth rather than simply the share chart.

For this Narrative to play out, a buyer today would need confidence that Upstart can keep model accuracy, funding access and credit performance aligned over time.

"Improvements in underwriting, automation, and personalization enhance loan approval rates, lower costs, and reduce default risks, positively impacting revenue and net margins. Strategic HELOC growth, backed by strong banking relationships, alongside expanded borrower base, sets stage for future revenue growth and earnings support."
