CNN signed a multi-year cooperation agreement with Google to study how Google's generative AI products can increase user engagement in its news reports. This collaboration is still in its early stages, and the two sides have yet to disclose how CNN will use Google's AI products to direct traffic to its own news content. However, CNN's senior vice president for strategic cooperation and business development, Sam Felix issued a statement on Thursday saying that the partnership will open up “a new way for audiences to access CNN's exclusive news stories, and CNN will also receive rewards for the distribution and use of its unique intellectual property rights in AI products.” “Google's innovations in generative AI have changed the way people find information and content, and now these tools will help us explore new ways to reach our audience and enhance user interaction,” Felix said in a statement. CNN emphasized in a press release that the agreement reflects its efforts to protect journalistic works in the age of artificial intelligence. Just a few months ago, CNN sued Perplexity AI for copyright infringement. At the time, the two parties failed to reach a licensing agreement.
