Research done by Chinese scientists shows that the tree-like branching structure of a single neuron can complete key computational steps in advanced cognition. The relevant results were published online in the international academic journal “Science” on the 16th. Team leader Xu Ninglong, a researcher at the Center for Excellence and Innovation in Brain Science and Intelligent Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, explained that the study updated the traditional view that “a single neuron is only a simple network node in cognitive computing”, showing that cognitive computation supporting flexible behavior can be completed within a single neuron, opening up a research paradigm for analyzing the underlying mechanisms of cognitive flexibility at the neuronal cell level, which is expected to inspire the design of more efficient and flexible artificial intelligence systems based on the principles of dendritic multi-domain computation.
