The Providence, Rhode Island-based bank said it had earnings of $1.41 per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of eight analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.38 per share.

The bank posted revenue of $3.27 billion in the period. Its revenue net of interest expense was $2.32 billion, falling short of Street forecasts. Six analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $2.33 billion.
