What Match Group Doubters Got Wrong

Listen to the news

If Match Group sat on your watchlist instead of in your portfolio, the recent move probably catches your eye. For Match Group shareholders, the return from the start of the year was 38.4%, including dividends. That outcome invites a tougher question. Back on 1 January 2026, when bulls talked up global smartphone penetration and wider acceptance of digital dating, what clues were on record that this assumption about a growing online dating audience might be right enough to matter?

The easy part of this move is behind Match Group. Zero in on 33 high quality undervalued stocks for companies trading below our estimates.

The Two Match Group Stories Investors Had To Weigh

The shares cost US$32.29 at the start of the period, and Match Group investors were effectively choosing between two very different stories.

The bullish narrative pointed to a Fair Value of US$47.75, a price level implied by forecasts, built on rising global smartphone use feeding more digital dating. It relied on assumptions that revenue would grow 5.2% a year and profit margins would move from 15.8% to 21.1% by about 2028.

The bearish case put Fair Value at US$29.75, a weaker implied price, and focused on risks from falling Tinder monthly active users, down 9% year over year. That view assumed only 1.7% annual revenue growth and a much smaller lift in margins to 16.4% over the same period.

What The Match Group Results Put To The Test

Match Group’s later Q2 2026 figures showed revenue at US$853.1 million compared with US$863.7 million a year earlier, while net income moved to US$170.5 million and net margin to 20.0%. That pattern supported the bullish profitability story but challenged simple growth assumptions, so the evidence cut both ways rather than cleanly backing one camp.

The hinge point was clear: expectations about rising monetization and margins mattered more than headline user counts. When you assess a different platform business, check whether profit and net margin trends actually line up with whatever revenue story is being presented.

What Today’s Match Group Price Already Assumes

Match Group now trades at US$42.95. The selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits below that level, which signals a view that recent gains from the start of the year already reflect a meaningful Tinder recovery story and solid Hinge contribution.

To judge that price, you need to ask what must keep going right, then weigh whether sustained payer growth across Tinder and Hinge can offset weaker trends in the Everyone & Everything portfolio and pressure from app store fees.

"The numbers on revenue, payer trends, profitability and capital returns imply that Match Group’s share price already embeds a successful Tinder turnaround, continued strong Hinge expansion and effective management of app store fees, leaving limited room for disappointment without valuation pressure."

How Could You Get There Earlier?

The story behind this run has already been told. The next one could be taking shape somewhere else. Where could you start looking before it becomes the headline?

  • Company 1 - 45% below our estimate - convert a record technology and industrial backlog into modular and electrical projects.
  • Company 2 - 32% below our estimate - tie surging AI hardware demand to a proprietary software stack for data centers.
  • Company 3 - 33% below our estimate - convert a growing subsea opportunity list into faster tieback and services contracts.

That is three of the list. See the full list of 25 financially solid companies →
