Caught Out By SJVN's Fall? Here's What The Bears Saw
Share
Listen to the news

SJVN entered this period with bullish analysts projecting rapid expansion and margin gains, while skeptics warned that delays, hydrology risk and rising finance costs could grind those ambitions down. For SJVN shareholders, the loss over the past year was 38.9%, including dividends. If you had bought on 16 October 2025, expecting capacity growth to do the heavy lifting, how much of that eventual setback was already hinted at in the margins and project pipeline?

Narratives are how investors here put a case on the record, with explicit assumptions about revenue, margins and the multiple. Those assumptions imply an estimated Fair Value.

The Argument SJVN Investors Were Really Weighing

The shares cost ₹88.97 at the start of the period, and anyone buying SJVN then had to decide which story felt closer to reality.

The bullish narrative pinned fair value at ₹95. It rested on SJVN using government partnerships and a renewables-focused subsidiary to pursue premium margins and potentially smoother long term cash flows.

The bearish view put fair value at ₹46. That camp highlighted delays at projects such as Arun 3 and Bikaner, along with the risk that decentralized renewables and storage could affect returns from legacy assets.

What The Results Changed For SJVN

The clearest fact inside the period was the shift in profitability. SJVN reported total revenue of ₹9,174.5m in Q1 2026 and ₹13,943.8m in Q1 2027, while net income edged from ₹2,277.7m to ₹2,249.3m and net margin moved from 24.8% to 16.1%. That mix of higher sales and thinner margin cut both ways for the original bull and bear cases.

The lesson for any other stock is simple. When a story leans on premium margins, track net margin alongside revenue and test that claim against each new set of quarterly numbers.

What SJVN’s Lower Price Asks You To Believe

SJVN now trades at ₹53.88, with this selected Narrative arguing that its Fair Value sits above that level because earnings quality could improve as the current project set matures.

The argument leans on better use of the 4,196.5 MW portfolio and new assets. A buyer today would need to believe underused and loss-making projects can shift closer to planned returns.

"The 3,926.5 MW under construction across hydro, thermal and solar creates scope for SJVN to rebalance its earnings mix once these assets are operational, with a larger share of regulated or contracted cash flows. This can help dampen the impact of finance costs and depreciation on reported earnings."

Where SJVN’s Power Leads Next

SJVN points you toward one side of the power story. Massive projects, long contracts and regulated cash flows set the tone.

Look one step away and another puzzle appears. All that generation only matters if grids can move and manage electricity reliably.

A different business concentrates on that plumbing. It builds and services equipment that helps utilities convert, route and stabilise power for heavy users.

AI data centres, electrified transport and older grids share that need. As demand for dependable electricity planning grows, this quieter part of the chain could matter much more.

The argument comes with a number attached. → Uncover the power-grid company trading 27% below one Narrative's Fair Value
