AGNC Investment raised $992 million through an at-the-market stock offering.
Management expects return on equity between 18% and 20%.
Unencumbered cash and Agency assets totaled $6.3 billion at quarter end.
On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 20, 2026, AGNC Investment (NASDAQ:AGNC) reported a comprehensive loss of $1.28 per common share. Tangible net book value (total assets minus liabilities and intangibles) declined because Agency mortgage-backed securities (government-backed residential mortgage pools) underperformed interest rate hedges during the quarter. For long-term investors, wider yield spreads create a higher expected return profile on newly deployed capital.
Three takeaways from the call explain how the business is positioning for the future.
AGNC Investment issued $992 million of common stock through its at-the-market offering program (an equity mechanism that sells new shares directly into open markets at prevailing prices) after joining the S&P MidCap 400 index. Management used the equity demand to expand its asset portfolio by $2.5 billion while keeping leverage at 7.9 times tangible net book value.
We took advantage of this outsized liquidity to issue $992 million of common stock through our at-the-market offering program at a significant premium to tangible net book value.

Wider spreads between Agency mortgage-backed securities and benchmark interest rates expanded return potential on levered investments. Management calculated that current market yields support an expected return on equity (ROE, a metric measuring profitability relative to shareholder equity) near 20%.
"So I would say expected returns are in the 18%-20% range based on where mortgages are trading today," said Peter Federico, President, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer.
Higher primary mortgage rates reduced extension risk (the risk that borrowers prepay slower when rates rise, lengthening a bond's price sensitivity). With less than 2% of the mortgage universe carrying a refinancing incentive, underlying portfolio cash flows have become far more predictable.
In summary, the aggregate cash flows of the mortgage universe are more stable today because extension risk is minimal and prepayment options are further out of the money.

Fixed income market volatility continues to test mortgage asset pricing, yet reduced new supply and steady institutional demand support long-term stabilization. AGNC Investment relies on its $6.3 billion liquidity buffer and scale within the Agency mortgage market to capture high-yielding assets while managing duration risk.
Taken together, these conditions should benefit Agency MBS performance over time.

Management is watching interest rate stabilization and Federal Reserve monetary policy as key indicators for future portfolio deployment. Capital flexibility remains central to navigating volatile market cycles and protecting shareholder equity.
We got a lot of flexibility going forward. We just need market conditions to stabilize.
