Karooooo (KARO) Stock Price Defies Q2 Results As Cash Conversion Lags
Share
Listen to the news

Karooooo just reported Q2 FY2027 numbers and the stock barely flinched, up about 1% on the day. That is a muted reaction for a telematics and fleet software business putting up ZAR 1,640.2m in quarterly revenue and ZAR 286.8m in net income from ongoing operations.

The emotion in the price today looks more like a shrug than a verdict. Investors appear cautious, weighing a rich P/E of 29.7x and a share price above a discounted cash flow estimate against solid subscription momentum and profitability that still throws off cash, even with device inventory soaking up working capital.

Love Karooooo's recurring revenue engine but uneasy about paying a 29.7x P/E for it? Compare that setup with our 35 high quality undervalued stocks to see businesses that pair solid fundamentals with more modest pricing.

Karooooo’s Bull Story Meets Concrete Subscription Milestones

The optimistic view on Karooooo hinges on recurring earnings power, not just more connected devices. That hinges on a clear operational promise.

"The main thing that has to go right is that Karooooo continues to translate high commercial ARR retention and expanding IoT and video adoption into profitable subscriber and revenue growth across regions, despite FX and ARPU headwinds."

Q2 hits several of those checkpoints. Commercial ARR retention sits at 95%, subscribers are up 18% to about 2.9m, and Cartrack subscription revenue grows 23% in constant currency despite FX drag. Subscription gross margin of 71% and record operating profit indicate that this growth is still arriving with clear profitability.

Karooooo Bear Case: ARPU And Cash Limits Under Review

The cautious view argues Karooooo’s growth machine could hit a ceiling if user monetisation and cash generation lag subscriber gains.

"Management’s expectation that ARPU in Asia will trend down over time toward South Africa levels, as more subscribers come from lower priced Southeast Asian markets, suggests that expansion into underpenetrated regions could dilute revenue per user and put persistent pressure on net margins."

Q2 shows that risk is not fully materialising yet. Asia subscription revenue grew 25% in constant currency and group subscription gross margin held at 71%. The sharper warning sits in cash conversion. Free cash flow of ZAR 41m, after ZAR 966m of device investment in H1, keeps the concern over working capital intensity very much alive.

Hunt Quiet Mispricings Before They Move

Karooooo shows how a solid operational story can trade on a tight valuation and cautious reaction. The real opportunity is finding stocks that could be undervalued before the market corrects them.

  • Company 1 - 45% below our estimate - expands a Pacific banking footprint by integrating a new franchise and maintaining conservative credit standards.
  • Company 2 - 39% below our estimate - builds paint and window protection products around new manufacturing capacity and closer links with automakers and dealerships.
  • Company 3 - 47% below our estimate - supplies concrete reinforcement products to projects backed by long term public infrastructure funding programs.
