According to a report by Israel's Channel 12 TV station on the 21st, dozens of Israeli fighter jets and air tankers flew over Syrian and Iraqi airspace earlier this week, close to the Iranian border, and then returned. The report quoted two senior US officials as saying that the operation took place from the evening of the 19th to the early morning of the 20th. Israeli fighter planes flew in a formation and route similar to attacking Iran. The report said that Israel notified the US of this operation in advance and described it as an exercise aimed at deterring Iran and demonstrating the military capabilities of the Israeli military. US officials believe that Israel may be trying to induce Iran's air defense system to fire on Israeli fighter planes, thus obtaining an excuse to launch a military attack against Iraq. Israeli officials have yet to comment on this.
