Share
Listen to the news

East West Bancorp stock added 2.4% in regular trading to close at US$131.39, just two days after dropping its Q3 2026 report, and at first glance the move looks like a simple relief rally. The headline is stronger than that. The bank posted record quarterly revenue of US$754 million and basic earnings per share of about US$2.78, which keeps its trailing P/E around 12.3x while peers trade higher on average.

Short term traders are reacting to a solid print. Longer term investors are weighing a richer profit base against valuation and balance sheet risks that play out over years rather than days.

East West Bancorp Bull Case Meets Deposit Reality

The optimistic view hangs on relationship deposits and fortress metrics doing the heavy lifting for East West Bancorp.

"The main thing that has to go right is that East West Bancorp continues to grow its relationship-driven, small-business-focused noninterest-bearing deposits while holding credit quality and capital at current strong levels."

The latest quarter moves this thesis from theory to evidence. Average noninterest bearing balances rose 16% and made up more than 26% of total deposits. Credit metrics stayed tight, with nonperforming assets at 30 bps and net charge offs at 15 bps. Capital remains strong, with CET1 at 15.4% and TCE ratio around 10%.

Bear Case On Fees And Funding Pressure Checked

The worry list centers on fee instability and expensive CDs eroding profitability at East West Bancorp.

"Persistent competition for deposits, including other banks offering higher CD rates, could force East West Bancorp to keep pricing 6 to 12 month CDs around 3.60% to 3.80% to retain roughly US$13b of quarterly CD roll offs."

Recent results lean against that fear. Average deposit costs actually fell 2 bps and management still raised full year net interest income guidance to a range of 9% to 10%. Fees remain lumpy quarter to quarter in the history, yet through the first nine months noninterest income is up 11% with management now targeting more than 10% fee growth for 2026.

Hunt Fresh Mispricing After Earnings

East West Bancorp just reported results that highlight how a single quarter can reshape views on a bank's profitability and risk profile. The real opportunity is finding stocks that appear undervalued before the market reassesses their prospects.

  • Company 1 - 33% below our estimate - converts a growing backlog of AI infrastructure and multicloud database contracts into subscription-based revenue streams as customers expand usage.
  • Company 2 - 49% below our estimate - uses a purpose-built digital banking platform to secure primary small business relationships as clients move away from branch-focused lenders.
  • Company 3 - 34% below our estimate - secures longer contracts for offshore support vessels as constrained supply and new project awards encourage operators to reserve marine capacity earlier.
