BankUnited (BKU) Q3 Earnings Show Margin Strength And Cheap Stock
Share
Listen to the news

BankUnited stock barely flinched after Q3 2026 earnings, slipping about 0.6% to around US$42 even though the headline story was solid profitability. The bank printed basic earnings per share of US$1.02 on total revenue of US$271.5m, numbers that kept return metrics and net income moving in the right direction. In the short term, that muted price move can look underwhelming. Viewed over a longer period, investors are weighing a high quality 12 month profit stream and a P/E of 10.7x that appears inexpensive compared with broader US banking peers.

BankUnited Bull Case: Discipline Shows Up In The Numbers

The bullish story hinges on BankUnited actually running the playbook of disciplined growth, not just talking about it.

"The main requirement is continued discipline on deposit mix, loan pricing, and capital returns while the bank shifts further toward commercial loans and core operating deposits."

Q3 results line up with that goal. Net interest margin reached 3.16% while average deposit costs fell to about 1.99%, which points to careful pricing on both sides of the balance sheet. Average non interest bearing commercial deposits rose to just over 32% of total deposits. Management returned about US$97m through buybacks in Q3 and kept CET1 near 12.1%, so capital returns are active without loosening risk limits.

BankUnited Bear Case: Credit And Execution Fears Tested

The bear view focuses on two pressure points: earnings reliability and credit quality, and whether they are slipping again.

"Elevated net charge offs concentrated in a handful of C&I sectors such as healthcare, transportation and construction, running above the bank’s through the cycle target, indicate that credit costs could stay higher for longer and reduce net income if problem credits are slower to resolve than expected."

This quarter pushes back on that concern. Net charge offs stayed low, criticized and classified loans improved year on year, and the provision was US$9m with guidance of US$15m for Q4. Execution risk also looks more contained. Revenue of US$271.5m and basic EPS of US$1.02 moved higher year on year, while margin expanded and the share price reaction was muted rather than sharply negative.

Track Quiet Disconnects In Plain Sight

BankUnited recently showed that steady earnings can align with a muted share price reaction. The real opportunity is tracking stocks that could be undervalued before markets reassess them.

  • Company 1 - 44% below our estimate - uses a high retention banker platform to integrate a merger while scaling specialty lending and fee-based activities.
  • Company 2 - 20% below our estimate - leans into AI data center and defense orders as expanded capacity and acquisitions reshape its mission systems focus.
  • Company 3 - 33% below our estimate - expands high horsepower engine capacity to serve long term data center power contracts while refocusing capital on higher return initiatives.

That is three of the list. See all 33 potentially undervalued companies →
