Valmont Industries (VMI) Stock Ignores Q3 Earnings Margin Momentum
Share
Listen to the news

Valmont Industries just printed its Q3 2026 scorecard and the market barely flinched. The stock eased about 0.5% today, while the report showed a lift in diluted EPS to roughly US$6.24 and an operating margin of 15.7%. That muted share reaction sits awkwardly next to a business that has expanded profitability in a capital heavy infrastructure and agriculture equipment environment.

The real story is in margins. While traders marked the price down slightly, fundamental investors are looking at a company generating more earnings power from roughly US$1.1b in quarterly revenue and questioning whether a flat tape really aligns with that shift.

Impressed by Valmont Industries turning US$1.1b of quarterly revenue into a 15.7% operating margin but wary of paying up for a capital heavy business? Benchmark VMI against our screener of list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (25 results).

Valmont bull case: utility flywheel starts to bite

Supporters argue that Valmont Industries has already started to turn its utility buildout into a self funding engine. The claim is clear.

"Expansion of North America utility manufacturing through brownfield and brownfield plus projects, combined with AI tools for scheduling and engineering that management expects to lift throughput by 3% to 5% and engineering productivity by about 15% over time, is already producing more than US$1 of annualized revenue for every US$1 of capex at mid 20s incremental margins."

Q3 backs up that thesis. Infrastructure sales rose faster than the group, North America Utility grew 23%, and operating margin reached 15.7% with guidance raised on EPS, which points to those projects converting into higher quality earnings.

Valmont bear case: cost and telecom risks not cleared

The bear story leans on input inflation and end market drag. The narrative spells that out bluntly.

"Raw material and freight costs have risen sharply in 2026, with steel up about 27% to 40%, zinc up about 35%, and diesel up about 45% to 85%, while there is a two quarter lag before Valmont Industries can fully recover these through pricing. If this cost pressure persists or intensifies, it could erode Infrastructure margins and limit earnings growth."

Q3 margins improved, so that hit has not overturned the thesis yet, but management flagged more pressure into Q4 and telecom revenue fell 33.8%, so the risk side of the story is still visible in these numbers.

Hunt For Quiet Fundamental Shifts

Valmont Industries recently reported stronger earnings while its share price response remained muted. The real opportunity is finding stocks that could be undervalued before the market corrects them.

  • Company 1 - 39% below our estimate - uses government-backed trade-in programs and broader secondhand acceptance to channel more devices into a refurbishing network.
  • Company 2 - 34% below our estimate - benefits as constrained offshore vessel supply and limited fleet additions encourage longer contracts for specialized support ships.
  • Company 3 - 46% below our estimate - integrates a regional banking acquisition to add low cost deposits and expand its lending capabilities across customer segments.

Those are three of them. See all 33 potentially undervalued companies →
