Moody's (MCO) Q3 Earnings Showcase A Margin Machine Facing Valuation Risk
Share
Listen to the news

Moody’s stock barely flinched after Q3 2026 earnings, edging up about 1.2% to roughly US$481. On the surface that looks like a routine reaction. Underneath, the story is about a powerful profit engine. Adjusted operating margin landed at 52.6% and trailing net margin sits in the mid 30s, which is rare air for financial services.

Short term traders may focus on a softer quarter to quarter earnings per share print. Longer term investors are more likely to weigh those unusually high margins against a rich valuation and a balance sheet that already carries a meaningful level of debt.

Love Moody’s rich margins but concerned about paying up for a highly valued stock with debt on the balance sheet? You can filter for companies that mix strong profitability with sturdier financial footing using the list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (25 results).

Moody’s moat and software pivot under the microscope

Supporters argue Moody’s is morphing from a pure rater into a broader financial infrastructure and software powerhouse.

"What makes the story even stronger today is that Moody’s is no longer only a ratings company. Over the past decade, management has steadily built Moody’s Analytics (MA) into a major recurring-revenue software and data business."

Q3 keeps that storyline intact. MA revenue grew in the mid single digits with organic constant currency growth of 8% and recurring revenue near 99%. ARR reached US$3.7b with about 8% growth and roughly 95% retention. MA margin expanded to 35.3%, showing the software and data tilt is contributing meaningfully to overall profitability.

Testing Moody’s cyclicality and disruption worries

The bear story focuses on issuance swings and the threat that technology erodes Moody’s role.

"That diversification matters because Moody’s core ratings business is cyclical. When interest rates rise aggressively, bond issuance slows and ratings revenue can temporarily fall sharply, exactly what happened in 2022 when the Federal Reserve tightened policy."

Recent numbers show the cycle bite but not structural damage. Rated issuance in Q3 was about US$1.7t and slipped 2% year over year. MIS revenue eased 1% and transaction revenue declined 5%, yet the MIS margin stayed very high at 64.4%. At the group level, adjusted operating margin of 52.6% and reaffirmed full year guidance argue that volatility remains manageable rather than existential.
