Sonoco (SON) Q3 Results Sink Into Loss After Goodwill Hit
Share
Listen to the news

Sonoco Products came into this Q3 2026 report as a high-yield packaging stock trading at US$50.27, roughly flat over the past month and down about 14% across three months. That setup implied low expectations. The print itself was anything but quiet. Management posted about US$2.0b in quarterly sales and a sharp basic earnings per share loss of US$7.36 driven by a large non cash goodwill impairment in Consumer EMEA, even as adjusted earnings power and cash flow held up more firmly beneath the headline.

The share price slipped 1.35% on the day, a muted move for numbers this heavy. For investors, the real story now is whether that accounting hit, coupled with weak trailing profit and a still leveraged balance sheet, changes the long term packaging thesis for Sonoco Products or simply compresses the timeline for improving margins and debt metrics.

Sonoco Bull Case: Cost Plan Progress Meets Inflation Reality

The upbeat story hangs on Sonoco Products turning its Profitability Performance Plan into higher margins and steadier cash generation.

"The prior focus on acquisitions has shifted toward a multi year profitability performance plan that targets $150 million to $200 million of savings by 2028, with $18 million of savings realized year to date 2026 and about $38 million annualized."

Q3 adjusted EBITDA of US$352m and 17.2% margin, plus US$285m of operating cash flow and debt reduction of US$176m, show that productivity work is visible. At the same time, management is cutting full year adjusted EPS expectations to US$5.30 to US$5.50, which signals that inflation and weaker Consumer volumes are still eating into those savings.

Sonoco Bear Case: Input Shocks Challenge Margin Repair Story

The bear argument focuses on cost pressure and the risk that the margin rebuild stalls as inflation bites into packaging economics.

"Exposure to input cost inflation, tariffs, and FX volatility, especially in energy, freight, and petrochemical inputs, has already reduced Sonoco Products' operating profit by roughly $10 million in a single quarter and could continue to squeeze net margins and earnings if price increases and cost savings do not keep pace."

Q3 shows that concern playing out. OCC costs rose about US$25 per ton and URB production costs climbed US$60 per ton, while freight was up US$17m. Management estimates US$40m to US$50m of combined volume and inflation headwinds, and full year guidance now points to lower adjusted EPS than earlier in 2026, even with price hikes and PPP benefits.

  • Company 2 - 35% below our estimate - grows advisory fees as a broader deal pipeline and new senior hires convert into larger capital markets mandates.
  • Company 3 - 36% below our estimate - expands payment volumes for large merchants while managing take rate pressure through higher margin products and greater automation.
