Huntington Bancshares (HBAN) Stock Shrugs Off Q3 Results As Margin Risks Linger
Share
Listen to the news

Huntington Bancshares stock barely flinched after its Q3 2026 report, slipping about 0.4% to US$15.66 despite solid headline numbers. At first glance that muted move might suggest a forgettable quarter. For a regional bank competing hard on deposits and fees, the story is sharper than that.

Net income reached US$680m with basic earnings per share of roughly US$0.34 and revenue at US$2.67b, solid firepower for a lender of this size. Short term traders focused on the quiet price tape. Long term holders are more likely to focus on how those profits support capital strength and the multiyear earnings targets management just reaffirmed.

Huntington Bull Case: Fee Pivot and Synergy Check

The optimistic story around Huntington Bancshares hinges on fee momentum and execution on partnerships rather than just rate tailwinds.

"The main thing that has to go right is Huntington Bancshares successfully executing its shift toward larger, recurring fee income streams and partnership-driven cost and revenue synergies, while managing ongoing net interest margin pressure."

Q3 shows progress. Value added fee revenue grew 15% year on year with capital markets and treasury among the standouts. Cadence expense synergies are now completed with full run rate expected in Q4 and Veritex savings already in hand. NIM of 3.25% held roughly stable quarter on quarter, which keeps the funding side from undercutting that fee and synergy work.

Huntington Bear Case: Margin Strain and Target Risk

The cautious view argues that funding costs and tighter spreads could swamp the fee strategy and leave guidance exposed.

"Higher funding costs are already feeding through to results, with full year 2026 net interest income now expected at the bottom end or modestly below the prior outlook and net interest margin guided to stay roughly flat near 3.20% into late 2027, so if deposit pricing competition or tighter loan spreads turn out to be more intense or more persistent than management currently assumes, net interest income and overall profitability could fall short of current expectations."

Q3 data partly reflects this strain. Cost of deposits rose to 1.90% and net charge offs ticked higher, while EPS was flat sequentially. Management still reaffirmed the 2027 EPS range of US$1.75 to US$1.83 and ROTCE of 17% to 18%, so current results neither confirm nor break the worry that those goals could eventually prove too ambitious.

Spot Potential Mispricings Early

Huntington Bancshares just showed how earnings strength and share price reaction do not always line up neatly. The real opportunity is finding stocks that could be undervalued before the market corrects them.

  • Company 1 - 35% below our estimate - targets higher margin projects by tightening its portfolio and expanding aftermarket flow-control service work.
  • Company 2 - 17% below our estimate - rides demand for premium tea as new stores and membership programs deepen repeat customer spending.
  • Company 3 - 24% below our estimate - embeds into enterprise workflows by metering cloud and AI usage that customers increasingly scale across operations.

That is three of the list. See the full list of 30 companies trading below our fair value estimates →
