Nokia (HLSE:NOKIA) Q3 Earnings Boost Profit But Cash Strain Persists
Share
Listen to the news

Nokia walked into this Q3 2026 report out of favour, with the share price down about 20% over the past month and around 11% over the week, despite a rich P/E of 52.3x. The headline today is simple. The network vendor just printed solid profitability with net income from ongoing operations of €173m on revenue of €5,154m, while the most powerful story sat in margins.

The sentiment swing now hinges on that squeeze. Trailing net profit margin of 3.8% versus 4.5% a year earlier clashes with the premium multiple, forcing investors to ask whether one quarter of better earnings is enough to calm a nervous tape.

Nokia’s AI Playbook Starts To Show Through The P&L

The bullish story hangs on Nokia turning AI and cloud buzz into higher quality earnings rather than just headline growth.

"The main thing that has to go right is Nokia’s execution on its shift toward software centric and AI enabled mobile networks and continued refocusing of the portfolio away from lower margin activities so that the restructuring, capacity investments and AI RAN roadmap translate into durable margin expansion."

Q3 gives early proof of delivery. AI and cloud net sales more than doubled and now account for about 12% of turnover. Network Infrastructure grew 15% with Optical up 18% and IP Networks up 43%. Comparable operating margin reached 11.7%, so restructuring and mix shift are starting to lift profitability, even as free cash flow conversion remains pressured by working capital and restructuring outlays.

Nokia bear case on cash and restructuring meets reality

Bears worry Nokia’s restructuring-heavy plan will erode earnings quality rather than fix it.

"Even as Network Infrastructure gross margin has improved on scale and integration benefits, Nokia Oyj is taking on about €800 million of restructuring and integration charges in 2026, including China related costs. Any slippage in execution or savings delivery could leave net margins materially below what current optical and IP growth assumptions imply."

Q3 shows this concern is live, not theoretical. Comparable operating margin reached 11.7%, yet free cash flow was a €99m outflow and full year cash conversion guidance has been cut to 35 to 55%. Restructuring charges for 2026 are now expected at €1.1b, above the earlier €800m framing, which keeps pressure on net profitability milestones.

Hunt For Mispriced Execution Stories

Nokia Oyj recently highlighted the challenge of aligning valuation with margin improvements. The real opportunity sits in understanding execution plans for stocks that could be undervalued before the market closes the gap.

  • Company 1 - 31% below our estimate - deepen secured lending into policy backed sectors while expanding a dense branch network targeting stable low cost deposits.
  • Company 2 - 32% below our estimate - shift revenue mix toward data center and harsh environment fiber as capacity additions reweight away from weaker legacy demand.
  • Company 3 - 27% below our estimate - win high specification grid and offshore wind cable projects supported by long cycle energy transition investment and growing order pipelines.
