Pool came into this Q3 2026 report with a premium P/E tag and modest growth expectations, then shocked the market with a 14.4% jump in the share price to about US$197. That move arrived on the back of a quarter where sales reached roughly US$1.5b and adjusted earnings per share landed close to US$3.40, essentially flat on the prior year.
The reaction points to renewed enthusiasm. The numbers, however, indicate a business working through margin pressure while aiming to justify a higher valuation. That expectation gap is what matters for investors reading this quarter.

Ask Charlie what Pool’s new multi-year plan really targets.
The optimistic view on Pool hinges on recurring demand and richer spend per backyard translating into more durable earnings power over time.
"Resilient maintenance demand, which represented about 64% of 2025 pool product sales, together with an installed base that grew by an estimated 60,000 new U.S. pools in 2025, supports a larger recurring revenue pool that can feed both top line and more stable earnings over time."
Q3 results show this thesis partly holding. Sales grew about 4% with pricing and maintenance led demand doing the heavy lifting, and equipment, chemicals and building materials all positive. Earnings stayed roughly flat and gross margin compressed by about 60 basis points, so the revenue engine is working while the profit stability claim still looks unproven.

The cautious view on Pool Corporation argues that discretionary weakness and mix issues could choke operating leverage even as maintenance holds up.
"Continued deflationary pressure in commodity chemicals or increased competition for private label placements could limit gross margin expansion and earnings growth."
Q3 delivers some backing for that concern. Gross margin compressed by about 60 basis points even though revenue rose roughly 4% and POOL360 penetration improved. Higher freight costs and faster growth with large customers weighed on percentage profitability, and SG&A grew slightly faster than sales. Earnings per share stayed almost unchanged, so this quarter does not yet rebut fears about constrained margin progress.
Pool just reminded you that a strong share price move can sit on top of stubborn margin questions. The real opportunity is finding stocks that could be undervalued before the market corrects them.
