Kaiser Aluminum shareholders just took a heavy hit. The stock closed at US$153.95 before the Q3 2026 earnings release and now trades around US$114.99, a one day slide of about 25% that wipes out months of recent gains.
The headline numbers look far less dramatic than the price move. Q3 basic earnings per share landed at roughly US$1.90 on total revenue of about US$1.21b, with adjusted EBITDA of US$84m. The central issue is profit compression after an unusually strong Q2. For anyone with a multi year view, the focus shifts from this quarter’s squeeze to whether the recent earnings run and current valuation can absorb that kind of shock.

Earnings tell you how Q3 landed, but cash flows are what many valuation focused investors watch when they want to judge how durable Kaiser Aluminum’s performance really is. Based on Kaiser Aluminum's cash flows alone, the stock could be a hefty 43% undervalued.
Bulls have argued that Kaiser Aluminum’s big projects would steadily reset product quality and pricing power.
"Ramp up of the fourth coated line at Warrick and the strategic mix shift away from bare products into higher value coated packaging may expand conversion revenue per pound and structurally improve net margins as start up costs taper off through 2026."
Q3 shows meaningful progress toward that goal. Conversion revenue rose 25% to US$439m, conversion revenue per pound climbed 12% to US$1.46, and packaging conversion revenue advanced 31% with shipments up 6%. The catch is that start up and outage items still cut margins by about 640 basis points.
More cautious investors worry that the same projects and end markets could disappoint if pricing or execution slips.
"As start-up and outage related inefficiencies fade while new high margin coated packaging and aerospace plate capacity reaches full run rate, the company could move closer to its mid to high 20 percent EBITDA margin target."
Recent results give that concern some backing. Adjusted EBITDA held at US$84m year on year despite a 44% increase in reported revenue, and management now guides toward the low end of its 2026 EBITDA range. A roughly US$82m sequential EBITDA decline and tighter scrap spreads show how quickly metal dynamics and ramp costs can squeeze profitability.
