11:39 PM EDT, 10/22/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Rio Tinto Group (RIO.L) will invest $1.9 billion in the development of the Kangwinan bauxite project in Queensland, Australia, boosting its Weipa annual bauxite production capacity by 20 million tonnes. The mining giant said Friday that the first output is targeted in 2029, with full production expected by 2032. Rio Tinto added that the Kangwinan project will replace output from the Andoom mine near Weipa, which is nearing the end of its life this decade. It is also intended to help offset the planned closure of the Gove mine in 2029.
