Listen to the news

Key Points

  • Third-quarter gross margin rose to 51.7%.

  • Boston Beer produced 98% of domestic volume internally.

  • Sun Cruiser grew roughly 60% in tracked channels.

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 22, 2026, Boston Beer (NYSE:SAM) raised the lower end of its full-year earnings per share (EPS) guidance, a key metric of corporate profitability. Gains in gross margin -- the percentage of revenue remaining after subtracting direct production costs -- helped offset declining sales volumes across traditional beer. Three things management said stand out.

1. Internal Production Boosts Gross Margins to Multiyear Highs

Internal manufacturing efficiencies allowed the business to brew almost all of its domestic product in-house rather than relying on third-party contract brewers. This operational pivot pushed quarterly gross margins to their highest level since 2017.

In the third quarter, we produced 98% of our domestic volume internally compared to 89% in the third quarter of last year.

2. Beyond Beer Portfolio Expansion Drives Ready-to-Drink Growth

Consumer demand continues to shift away from traditional beer and toward ready-to-drink (RTD) spirit teas and flavored drinks. Rapid volume expansion in brands like Sun Cruiser is helping protect revenue while legacy beer categories face ongoing pressure.

Sun Cruiser has become a top 4 spirits RTD in just over 2 years and continues to rank among the category's fastest growing brands in combined measured on and off premise channels.

3. New Incubator Brands Target High-Margin Alcohol Categories

Early-stage beverage rollouts like LYTT electric coolers yield significantly higher per-case profit margins than standard malt products. Management plans to expand distribution of these distinctively packaged concepts across additional states before initiating nationwide rollouts in 2027.

LYTT electric coolers, which initially launched in 5 states, has now expanded to an additional 18 states and will be available nationally in 2027.

Looking Ahead

Brewery efficiency gains and supply chain savings continue insulating profit margins against consumer spending headwinds, backed by national distribution scale.

The strong productivity we have delivered year to date along with our updated projection of lower tariff costs enables us to raise the low end of our gross margin and EPS guidance despite softer volume trends and higher freight costs.
-- Matthew Donal Murphy, Interim Chief Financial Officer

Wholesaler execution remains vital as retail shelf space expands.

We remain disciplined in how we manage the business and we are working closely with our wholesaler partners to strengthen marketplace execution to drive sustainable long term growth.
-- C. James Koch, Chief Executive Officer, brewer, and founder
