The Toronto-based company said it had net income of 63 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to 92 cents per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 84 cents per share.

The communications and media company posted revenue of $3.89 billion in the period, also surpassing Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $3.78 billion.
