Key Points

  • First-quarter revenue grew 55% year over year to $4.4 billion.

  • Western Digital generated $1.4 billion in free cash flow during Q1.

  • The company increased its quarterly cash dividend by 17% to $0.175.

On its first quarter of fiscal 2027 earnings call, held on Oct. 22, 2026, Western Digital (NASDAQ:WDC) announced revenue grew 55% year over year to $4.4 billion on expanding cloud storage demand. The performance proves that data growth from artificial intelligence requires massive physical storage capacity, giving the business strong pricing power and expanding profit margins. Cash flow generation is allowing management to raise the quarterly dividend while paying down debt. Three takeaways from the call reveal why the business is well positioned over the long term.

1. Technology Upgrades Drive Capacity Growth Without Extra Factory Build-Out

Western Digital is boosting storage capacity by moving customers to energy-assisted perpendicular magnetic recording technology (ePMR), which packs more data onto existing disk platters. This transition lets the business deliver higher storage volume without increasing capital expenditures or spending on equipment and facilities to build new factories.

As we ramp production across our next-generation ePMR and HAMR platforms, we expect our exabyte shipments to continue to increase through fiscal 2027 and beyond.

2. Pricing Discipline and Product Upgrades Drive Gross Margin Expansion

By shipping higher-capacity hard drives and renegotiating long-term customer contracts, Western Digital expanded its gross margin, or the percentage of revenue remaining after direct manufacturing costs, to 58%. Customers pay more per terabyte because denser drives lower power consumption and server floor space costs in data centers.

Gross margin reflects a mix shift toward higher capacity drives, disciplined operational execution and a favorable pricing environment across our portfolio as we continue to deliver greater value to our customers.

3. Data Storage Demand Stretches Out to 2030 Across Broadening Markets

Customer visibility now extends to 2030 as artificial intelligence models create massive volumes of system logs, model outputs, and video data that require permanent storage. Demand is expanding beyond central cloud providers into specialized neoclouds, or cloud providers focused specifically on artificial intelligence workloads, and physical automation systems.

We are increasingly seeing storage demand grow beyond our core cloud and hyperscale customers into enterprise environments and into newer end markets such as neocloud and AI frontier labs, resulting in a larger and more diversified customer base.
-- Irving Tan, Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Storage demand is compounding across cloud and enterprise networks, and the resulting tailwind is giving the business rare long-term visibility.

As we look ahead, demand remains robust. Customer engagements continue to deepen and broaden, and our visibility continues to improve.
-- Kris Sennesael, Chief Financial Officer

Vertical integration in proprietary drive heads and media gives Western Digital a durable cost advantage while keeping capital intensity low. Management is watching manufacturing execution on next-generation drive qualifications and pricing discipline across long-term customer contracts. Higher areal density delivers lasting cash generation.

In summary, accelerating exabyte growth, technology leadership, expanding margins and disciplined capital allocation provide a solid foundation for sustainable earnings, free-cash-flow growth and long-term shareholder value creation.
-- Kris Sennesael, Chief Financial Officer
