Rogers Communications (TSX:RCI.B) Q3 Results Lean On Cash Flow Over Growth
Share
Listen to the news

Rogers Communications just dropped its Q3 2026 scorecard and the emotional gap between screen and spreadsheet is wide. The stock closed today at CA$45.36, barely changed over the past week and soft over the past month, yet the business just printed between CA$1.3b and CA$1.4b in free cash flow for the quarter and a wireless adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization margin of 68%.

Short term traders focused on sluggish wireless revenue and muted subscriber gains. The bigger story for long term holders is a telecom operator leaning hard into cash generation while the share price barely budges.

Evaluating Rogers’ Capex Reset And Sports Upside

Optimists argue Rogers Communications can turn a lighter investment load and bigger sports footprint into a cash engine.

"Some analysts expect Rogers Communications to convert its lower capital intensity and sports and media scale into higher free cash flow that continues to run ahead of earlier expectations."

Q3 moved that theory from slide deck to income statement. Capital intensity sat at about 9.6% with capex down 46% and free cash flow around CA$1.3b to CA$1.4b, up roughly 65% year on year. Full MLSE ownership is now closed, and Sports & Media posted revenue growth of 9% with adjusted EBITDA up 12%, giving tangible support to the higher cash generation story.

Rogers Bear Case On Capex Restraint Still Unproven

The harsher view on Rogers Communications hinges on the idea that a slimmer network budget today plants the seeds for weaker earnings tomorrow.

"Although Rogers Communications is guiding to a structurally lower capital intensity with capital expenditures near 12% and higher free cash flow, the decision to cancel or defer certain network expansion projects in rural and wireline markets because returns are uneconomic raises the risk that future revenue growth and earnings will fall short of what this leaner investment profile assumes."

Q3 shows capital intensity around 9.6% and capex down 46%, yet adjusted EBITDA still grew and 2026 guidance for service revenue and EBITDA is unchanged. Wireless service revenue and ARPU are under pressure, partly from CRTC fee decisions. This gives the concern some traction, but the feared earnings break has not surfaced in these numbers.
