The Bet Behind Fidelity Bank’s Rally
Share
Listen to the news

If you only glanced at Fidelity Bank’s latest results, a softer net margin might not scream “success story.” Holding Fidelity Bank over the past year would have returned 20.9%, including dividends. That outcome sits beside a starting picture where analysts expected shrinking profit margins by 2028 and a higher future P/E to justify fair value. If you had been deciding back in October 2025, what exactly were you being paid to risk?

Fidelity Bank has already moved. See which of 192 high quality undervalued stocks still trade below our estimates.

The Argument Fidelity Bank Investors Were Really Weighing

The shares cost NGN19.8 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at Fidelity Bank then had to choose between two sharply different stories about where the business might head next.

On the optimistic side, one narrative saw the bank as worth NGN25.04, a rough guide to what the shares could be worth if its regional expansion, digital push and cost controls translated into higher revenue and a stronger net interest margin despite an assumed profit margin squeeze by 2028.

The more cautious view put fair value at NGN18.76 based on assumptions of 63.9% revenue growth, a 38.8% margin and a future P/E of 3.6x, but kept risk front and centre given how much of that thesis rested on Q1 2025’s very strong profit surge and improved credit quality continuing over a three year stretch.

What The Results Changed For Fidelity Bank

Fidelity Bank’s Q1 2026 update tested both stories. Revenue moved to NGN229,284m from NGN221,600m, which helped the optimistic case that top line could keep growing. Net income slipped to NGN74,471m from NGN91,101m and net margin fell to 32.5% from 41.1%. That shift in profitability supported the cautious view on future earnings power.

The hinge here was not revenue growth assumptions. It was future profitability. When judging another bank, focus on whether net margin trends actually match the profit story that was used to justify the starting P/E.

What Fidelity Bank’s Price Seems To Be Saying Now

Fidelity Bank now trades at NGN24, so the question is whether sentiment has stretched more than operations justify. The share move sits against a picture where revenue in Q1 2026 reached NGN229,284m compared with NGN221,600m in Q1 2025.

Earnings told a different story. Net income moved from NGN91,101m to NGN74,471m and net margin shifted from 41.1% to 32.5%. The key assumption for readers to test is how much profitability can support today’s earnings multiple.
