What Chewy Bears Saw Before The Fall
Share
Listen to the news

Chewy’s latest results read like a win for the business, with revenue, profit and net margin all higher than a year ago, yet the share chart tells a very different story. Holding Chewy over the past year would have meant a 37.5% loss, including dividends. If you had been weighing up a position back on 23 October 2025, how much of that drawdown was hinted at in the expectations already on record?

Narratives are how investors here put a case on the record, with explicit assumptions about revenue, margins and the multiple. Those assumptions imply an estimated Fair Value.

The move put Chewy in the middle of this trade. Scan 39 profitable AI stocks that aren't just burning cash for other companies exposed to it.

The Two Chewy Narratives Investors Had To Weigh

The shares cost US$36.23 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at Chewy then had to choose between two very different stories.

On the optimistic side, the bullish narrative pinned Fair Value at US$52. It relied on Chewy Vet Care, telehealth and ads as potential high margin engines, along with assumptions for faster revenue expansion and steady 3.2% profit margins through 2028.

The bearish case pointed to a Fair Value of US$33. It focused on low single digit active customer growth, flat pet adoption trends and marketing spend at 6% to 7% of net sales as key risks to both revenue and earnings.

What The Chewy Evidence Actually Tested

Chewy’s reported results between Q2 2026 and Q2 2027 showed revenue increasing from US$3,104.2m to US$3,330.2m, with net income moving from US$62m to US$80.5m and net margin edging up from 2.0% to 2.4%. That pattern supported the bullish focus on steady profitability rather than the bear case that called for margin compression.

The useful takeaway is simple. When a story leans on high margin engines, whether vet care, ads or subscriptions, keep checking reported net margin and absolute profit to see whether the thesis is turning into hard numbers.

What You Would Be Paying For In Chewy Today

Chewy now trades at US$21.93. The selected bullish Narrative places its Fair Value above that level and frames the gap around how much credit you give to pet health, Autoship and cost savings already in motion.

The key assumption you would be testing at today’s price is that recurring Autoship and Chewy Vet Care earnings genuinely mature into a higher margin ecosystem.

"The main thing that has to go right is that Chewy converts its Autoship base and Vet Care clinics into a durable, higher margin health and services ecosystem supported by automation, AI and sponsored ads. The current valuation implies the market is not fully pricing in Chewy’s mix shift toward recurring Autoship revenue, pet healthcare earnings and ongoing margin expansion."

Find Your Own Contrarian Opportunity

Passing on this one could have spared you a loss. Where might you find the opposite surprise? Start looking for companies whose prices leave room for a better outcome than investors expect. These three trade below our estimated value.

  • Company 1 - 49% below our estimate - converts a large backlog of higher margin projects into cash while managing dispute exposures.
  • Company 2 - 40% below our estimate - expands device trade in and recommerce volumes as policy support and consumer sustainability focus grow.
  • Company 3 - 35% below our estimate - tightens operations and increases aftermarket work while integrating a valves acquisition into its mix.

Those are three of them. See every one of the 27 undervalued companies on it →
