Is Lockheed Rocket Motor Deal Altering The Investment Case For Avio (BIT:AVIO)?
Share
Listen to the news
  • Lockheed Martin and Avio previously signed a cooperation agreement to expand solid rocket motor production capacity in the United States, initially targeting ER GMLRS and PrSM programs, with Avio committing more than US$500 million to new facilities.
  • The size of Avio's planned US investment signals a push to secure a place in critical U.S. defense supply chains rather than pursuing incremental export orders alone.
  • We will look at how Avio's investment narrative is affected by this large US$500 million capacity build out in solid rocket motors.

See how Avio's push into U.S. missile supply chains compares with other defense contractors ramping up capacity by running through our curated list of 42 power grid technology and infrastructure stocks.

What Is Avio's Investment Narrative?

Being a shareholder in Avio means buying into a fairly concentrated space and defense propulsion story. The firm is already earning its money from launchers and solid and liquid propulsion, with €600.6 million of revenue and improving margins, but it also needs to show that recent earnings strength is repeatable. The Lockheed Martin cooperation and US$500 million US build out fit that narrative, since they speak to capacity, customer access, and long cycle demand rather than a one off contract win.

In the near term, the big swing factors are execution on capital intensive projects, pricing power on technically complex work, and how that filters into returns on equity that today look low. Analysts see upside from current levels and expect double digit earnings and revenue growth, yet the current P/E of 68.2x already asks a lot from future delivery. The Lockheed deal might ease some demand risk, but it also raises the bar on flawless delivery in a new geography.

That said, there is a quieter issue in the background that could matter even more than contract wins or growth forecasts...

Exploring Other Perspectives

One alternate view on Avio leans hard into the Virginia facility as a catalyst. The most optimistic analysts were already baking in 14.3% annual revenue growth and earnings of €18.9 million by around 2029, even before this deal. That is a far brighter story than consensus, and it might shift again after this news.
