Dogecoin Labs will unite three different products within the DOGE business ecosystem in an attempt to deliver greater utility to users.
Previous attempts to introduce greater utility to the Dogecoin blockchain have fizzled out.
Dogecoin still trades at a 90% discount to its all-time high from 2021.
Admittedly, Dogecoin (CRYPTO: DOGE) has been a real dog this year. The world's most popular meme coin is down 32% in 2026 as I write this. It's now trading for mere pennies and has fallen off the list of the top 10 cryptocurrencies.
But now Dogecoin wants to be more than just a meme coin. In October, the Dogecoin Foundation announced that it is working actively to bring more utility to the DOGE blockchain. If that's really the case, then is Dogecoin finally ready to exit the crypto doghouse?
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
On Oct. 21, the Dogecoin Foundation announced the creation of Dogecoin Labs, a new entity that will combine three different products into one business ecosystem. It will consist of DogeOS, an app layer for the Dogecoin blockchain; MyDoge, a popular Dogecoin blockchain wallet; and Such App, a new merchant payments app.

In theory, all three product teams can now work together on building out different use cases for the Dogecoin blockchain ecosystem. For example, DogeOS is now developing new smart-contract functionality for Dogecoin users. In a best-case scenario, this could lead to the creation of a thriving decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem.
At the same time, Such App can continue to look for new merchants who are willing to accept DOGE as a form of payment for transactions. And MyDoge can continue to find new ways for coin holders to put their Dogecoin to work within the broader DOGE ecosystem.
It all sounds wonderful, but will it actually work? For example, take smart contracts. This has been tried before, with the launch of Dogechain in 2025. But attempts at doggy DeFi didn't work out as planned. Total value locked (TVL), a key metric for measuring overall DeFi strength, was negligible, and Dogechain eventually shut down earlier this year.
And what about payments? For years, investors have been hearing about Dogecoin being integrated into businesses owned by billionaire Elon Musk (a longtime supporter of the meme coin) as a form of payment. But that still hasn't happened at scale, because there simply isn't enough demand for it. The best you can do these days is use your Dogecoin to buy some Tesla swag.
Ultimately, it will be very difficult for Dogecoin to escape its meme coin origins, no matter how hard it tries. New spot Dogecoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), for example, have seen little in the way of investor inflows. That's proof that there's very little institutional support behind Dogecoin, so any price action will need to come entirely from retail investors.
As much as I'd like to hope that Dogecoin might deliver 10x returns to investors by hitting a price of $1 sometime soon, it's highly improbable. Dogecoin trades at a head-spinning 90% discount to its all-time high for a reason. There's very little meat left on the bone, even for a hungry dog.
