H2O America just dropped its Q3 2026 scorecard and the stock immediately jumped 4.4% to about $61. The tape says optimism. The income statement tells you why. Basic earnings per share landed at about $1.03 on revenue of roughly $250.2 million, a strong profitability print for a regulated water utility.
Yet this is where the sentiment reckoning kicks in. Traders are cheering the headline EPS surge, while the real tension sits in the premium P/E of 28.1x and ongoing balance sheet strain from weak interest coverage and recent dilution. Emotion is chasing earnings, but the capital structure still asks hard questions.
Love the clean earnings print from H2O America but uneasy about paying a rich P/E for a utility with balance sheet pressure? Compare that setup against our list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (24 results).

The bullish story hangs on capital projects and Texas scale translating into sturdier earnings power for H2O America.
"H2O America’s larger 2026 to 2030 capital plan of US$2.7b, which is 31% above the prior five year budget and is expected to lift the consolidated rate base from about US$2.8b at year end 2025 to US$5.1b by 2030, points to a bigger regulated asset base that can support future revenue and earnings."
Q3 revenue of US$250.2 million and net income excluding extra items of US$43.0 million show solid utility level earnings. However, trailing 12 month profit of US$104.9 million versus US$109.3 million indicates that the growth blueprint is not yet flowing through to higher sustained profitability.
The bear case focuses on whether the heavy spending and regulatory load erode near term economics while the plan scales.
"The necessity for significant capital investments in infrastructure projects remains live and has expanded, with H2O America now planning US$2.7b of capex from 2026 to 2030 and roughly US$400m of PFAS related spending. If these projects are delayed, are not fully placed into rate base, or underperform expectations, the higher depreciation and financing costs could weigh on net income and earnings."
Q3 basic EPS of US$1.03 compared with US$1.27 a year earlier and lower trailing 12 month net income support that concern, since earnings are under pressure even as the expansion agenda ramps and new equity funding is already in the share count.
