French soccer star Mbappé caused strong dissatisfaction among Chinese fans due to inappropriate remarks about China in the interview. Although he himself has issued a statement apologizing, the issues raised by this storm are worth pondering. The commercial value of public figures is based on social trust and sentiment. The more famous you are and the more fans you have, the more you have to take responsibility for your words and actions. No brand wants to go along with negative assets. Once the bottom line is touched and the public is offended, all the aura will quickly dissipate and even be repulsed. Today, more and more stars are on the global stage. No matter what country you are in, you cannot enjoy the rich rewards of the market while being slow or even offending the history, culture, social customs, and national feelings cherished by the local community. “Destroying the pot when you eat” will turn a good relationship into a bad word of mouth. The Chinese people call for “those who respect others, respect others endlessly”. We welcome exchanges and collisions between different cultures, but the basic premise is to be fearful and keep balance. It is this spirit of openness and inclusiveness and commitment to principles that has earned China understanding and respect.
