According to Woofun AI, Ark Investment carried out a holdings reduction operation on its ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB.US) in late October, involving an amount of approximately $15.9 million.
The move comes against a backdrop of the BTC price's failure to hold the $80,000 critical psychological barrier and increasing overall market uncertainty. Although the agency previously saw BTC rise of more than 40% in the third quarter, the price retracement since October forced management to make tactical adjustments to the portfolio to deal with net worth pressure from short-term fluctuations.
Judging from the microstructure of the market, the trading price of BTC fell to close to $79,700 on the morning of October 27. Compared with the high of around $86,000 at the beginning of October, the cumulative decline this month was about 6%.
Woofun AI collated data and showed that this price-level reversal directly triggered Ark Investments' compliance rebalancing mechanism. The agency strictly follows the principle of portfolio diversification and stipulates that no single asset should account for more than 10% of the total assets of the fund. Therefore, the reduction in ARKB's holdings in various investment funds this time is essentially to ensure that compliance boundaries are not breached, rather than a fundamental denial of the long-term future of cryptocurrencies.
Notably, since its launch, ARKB has attracted approximately $1.1 billion in net inflows and currently manages around $2.9 billion in assets. However, the cumulative net inflow amount and the size of assets under management do not guarantee a positive return — fluctuations in the price of BTC will affect the value of the ETF, and investors' redemptions will further affect the size of its assets.
Furthermore, the sell-off did not indicate whether Ark Investments cut its overall BTC holdings in all portfolios, as the sale only involved its holdings in ARKB.
The more critical variable is the tightening expectation of a macro-liquidity environment. Behind the fall in the price of BTC, investors are weighing various concerns brought about by overvaluation of AI-related stocks, rising oil prices, and rising bond yields. These factors will weaken investors' willingness to bear risk, which in turn will encourage them to invest less in volatile assets. The US Federal Reserve's interest rate decision to be announced on Wednesday is another important event for the market. Expectations about the direction of monetary policy may affect the short-term trend of BTC, especially when yields on bonds issued by the US Treasury continue to be high.
Investors will also obtain clues about market trends by observing the flow of BTC spot ETFs, bond yields, and the Federal Reserve's performance guidance. Unlike bonds, BTC does not generate interest income, so higher bond yields will make assets that provide returns more attractive, which may reduce the need for speculative investments. For ARKB, BTC's price performance and investors' capital inflows will continue to play a key role in the size of its assets under management. Ark Investment's current sell-off is a reflection of the fact that even if relevant institutions maintain an overall support attitude towards cryptocurrencies, portfolio managers can still adjust their positions according to market conditions.
