Sherwin-Williams just dropped its Q3 2026 scorecard and the paint is barely dry on the reaction. The stock fell about 2.7% on the day to roughly US$326, even though quarterly revenue landed at US$6.86b and basic earnings per share came in at US$3.41. That gap between a red screen and solid, if unspectacular, earnings captures the mood right now.
What really moved sentiment was margin pressure. Management talked up adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization of about US$1.4b and an adjusted margin near 20.5%, while also flagging softer sales to earnings conversion. The market latched onto that squeeze and largely ignored that full year adjusted earnings guidance was only narrowed, not reset.

Sherwin-Williams is growing sales but narrowing earnings guidance again. Ask Charlie what’s hiding in Sherwin-Williams’ softer-for-longer outlook.
"The main thing that has to go right is that Sherwin-Williams continues to execute on store footprint optimization, cost and SKU simplification, and digital tools such as AI-assisted apps and PRO+ platforms so that structural margin gains and returns on net assets remain intact even if end markets stay soft."
The latest quarter shows Sherwin-Williams largely doing what this ambition describes on the revenue and market share side, but not yet on profitability. Price and mix plus modest volume and acquisitions lifted sales, and management still talks about above market share gains. Yet adjusted EBITDA margin sits near 20.5% and sales to earnings conversion lagged internal hopes. Cost savings of about US$25m this year and a targeted US$75m in 2027 are tangible steps, although the impact is only starting to appear in reported margins.

Bearish investors worry Sherwin-Williams will eventually lose the raw material and mix battle as DIY softness lingers and cost levers tire.
"The increasing reliance on targeted price increases and restructuring to offset a raw material basket expected to be up high single digits in the back half of 2026 may work near term. However, sustained inflation in oil, natural gas and petrochemical inputs could erode the effectiveness of these levers and pressure earnings if inflation remains high while demand stays muted."
This quarter leans toward that concern. Adjusted EBITDA margin sits near 20.5% and earnings conversion fell short of internal hopes despite high single digit sales growth and ongoing pricing actions.
Sherwin-Williams just reminded investors that solid earnings and a softer margin story can still leave the share price under pressure. The real opportunity is finding stocks that could be undervalued before the market corrects them.
