Herc Holdings came into Q3 2026 earnings with a stock that had already been grinding higher, then exploded 22.8% to about $156 in the first session after the release. The move looks euphoric. The numbers behind it are blunt. Basic earnings per share jumped to roughly $3.11 on net income of about $104 million, turning a choppy profit record over the past year into a clear recovery story.
For an equipment rental operator that lives and dies on utilization and cash generation, this surge in profitability is the single data point resetting expectations around Herc Holdings today.

Ask Charlie what pulled Herc Holdings to raise 2026 guidance.
Optimists argued Herc Holdings could turn mega projects, specialty mix and cost work into real operating progress rather than just a story.
"The main requirement is that Herc Holdings continues to execute on integration, specialty expansion and digital adoption, while managing higher fuel, transportation and leverage, so that revenue growth translates into stronger margins and cash generation."
Q3 shows meaningful traction on that checklist. Integration is now described as complete, equipment rental revenue grew about 12%, and adjusted EBITDA rose about 9% with a 190 bps margin lift. Specialty fleet reached roughly 20% of original equipment cost and dollar utilization improved, while net leverage edged lower from 3.95x to 3.9x and free cash flow reached US$133 million year to date.

Bearish investors argued that Herc Holdings could keep grinding through mega projects and specialty growth yet see little benefit if fuel and transport costs stayed high and debt remained heavy.
"Bearish analysts expect Herc Holdings to face ongoing pressure on margins and returns if fuel and transportation costs stay elevated and the company continues to carry close to 4x net leverage despite acquisition synergies."
This quarter cuts against the idea of unrelenting margin squeeze. Adjusted EBITDA margin widened by about 190 basis points even with roughly 100 basis points of fuel and freight drag. The leverage concern is less resolved. Net leverage only edged from 3.95x to 3.9x, so the balance sheet test is still largely ahead of Herc Holdings.
