Elon Musk has clarified that Space Exploration Technologies Corp.’s (NASDAQ:SPCX) ambitious target of 10,000 annual Starship launches applies exclusively to its planned Louisiana spaceport, suggesting the company’s broader launch ambitions extend significantly beyond that figure.

Musk Clarifies SpaceX’s Massive Launch Ambitions

Responding Wednesday to an X post discussing SpaceX’s comments to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) about accommodating thousands of annual rocket launches, Musk wrote, "10k Starship launches/year is just from Starbase Louisiana."

The response followed discussion of the FAA’s preparations for substantially higher commercial launch volumes and SpaceX’s argument that outdated airspace management could constrain the industry’s growth.

Musk previously outlined plans for the $100 billion Louisiana facility, which Reuters clarified in August will occupy approximately 125,000 acres near Pecan Island.

SpaceX envisions more than 30 daily Starship flights from the site, equivalent to nearly 11,000 annually. Louisiana officials expect construction to begin in 2027, with initial launches targeted for 2029. The project could create 3,000 direct jobs, according to state estimates.

FAA Faces Growing Pressure Over Airspace

SpaceX argues that conventional air traffic management processes need modernization to accommodate reusable rockets operating at airline-like frequencies. The company has pointed to its Cleared airspace coordination technology, which it says major U.S. airlines already use, as a potential solution.

SpaceX previously reported that coordination with the FAA allowed authorities to reopen affected airspace within 10 minutes following Starship Flight 10. However, FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford previously told Reuters that regulators would require substantially improved reliability before approving a dramatic increase in launch frequency.

Louisiana Expands SpaceX’s Broader Launch Network

The Louisiana project complements SpaceX’s expanding facilities in Texas and Florida.

The FAA recently began reviewing SpaceX’s proposal to increase annual Starship launches from its Texas Starbase to 456, compared with its current authorization of 25.

Musk also expressed confidence in Louisiana’s development timeline, saying the company could begin operations in 2028, although 2029 remained more likely.

Earlier, Morgan Stanley highlighted the scale of SpaceX’s expansion, arguing investors underestimated Starship’s long-term potential. Nevertheless, the proposed launch cadence remains an aspiration requiring significant infrastructure development, regulatory approvals and technological progress.

Price Action: SpaceX shares rose 0.69% to $149.61 during pre-market trading on Wednesday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
