Sanoma (HLSE:SANOMA) Q2 Earnings Clash With Margin And Debt Strain
Share
Listen to the news

Sanoma Oyj shares closed at €9.31 after a choppy few months, with the price down over the past week and past month even as the latest numbers landed. Q2 2026 put fresh figures on the table, including basic earnings per share of €0.20 and net income of €32.6m, that sit inside a much bigger story about where this media and learning group is heading.

The real tension now sits in the long view. A trailing net profit margin of 1.3% and a P/E of 87.9x against a high debt load mean this release is as much about valuation strain as it is about quarterly relief.

Concerned that Sanoma Oyj is carrying a high P/E and limited net margin while debt stays heavy on the balance sheet? You can weigh it up against sturdier peers with our list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (207 results)

Q2 2026 Earnings Summary

  • Revenue (Q2 2026 vs Q2 2025): €334.7m vs. €339.8m (slight decline in quarterly sales)
  • Net Income (Q2 2026 vs Q2 2025): €32.6m vs. €30.6m (modest improvement in quarterly profit)
  • Basic EPS (Q2 2026 vs Q2 2025): €0.20 per share vs. €0.19 per share (small uplift in earnings per share)
  • Net Profit Margin (Trailing 12 Months): 1.3% vs. 2.9% a year earlier (profitability compressed on a full year view)

Earnings tell only part of the story, and investors who care about what they are paying for often focus on the cash that actually comes through the door. When you look at Sanoma Oyj's cash flows in isolation, the stock could be a meaningful 15% undervalued.

Sanoma curriculum and AI thesis meets key hurdles

The bullish story hinges on Learning using curriculum cycles, digital tools and AI to lift earnings quality and keep margins healthy.

"Curriculum-driven expansion in K12 learning, including recent acquisitions of Vicens Vives in Spain and Fluentbe in Poland, is widening Sanoma Oyj’s content portfolio and digital reach across large European school and tutoring markets. This can support sustained Learning net sales growth and maintain the segment’s adjusted operating margin above 23%."

Q3 Learning net sales of €667m versus €658m and adjusted operating profit of €200m versus €183m show this engine working, with management now expecting the segment margin to stay clearly above 23% and improve as new methods and the Sanna AI Teacher Assistant scale.

Bear case tests Sanoma execution and leverage goals

On the risk side, the concern is that execution stumbles and leverage discipline undercut the whole plan.

"The main factor that has to go right is continued execution on curriculum reforms, digital product uptake and integration of acquisitions like Vicens Vives and Fluentbe, while keeping Learning margins above 23% and leverage moving below the 2.5x target."

Integration looks on track, with Vicens Vives helping Spain and Fluentbe folded into the broader offering, yet Spanish funding delays, Italian secondhand pressures and uncertain Finnish advertising show execution sensitivity. Net debt has climbed to about €716m and leverage is 2.7x, although management guides toward moving at or below the 2.5x mark as Q4 cash collections arrive.

Hunt Emerging Earnings Disconnects

Sanoma Oyj illustrates how earnings stories and share prices can move apart for extended periods. The real opportunity is spotting stocks that could be undervalued before markets reassess them.

  • Company 1 - 32% below our estimate - targets data centre expansion by selling high end GPU racks tied to an AI software ecosystem.
  • Company 2 - 23% below our estimate - converts a defense backlog into higher margin long duration programs in munitions, vehicles, electronics, space and autonomous systems.
  • Company 3 - 34% below our estimate - expands high horsepower engine capacity to supply power systems for data centres through multi year contracts.

That is three of the list. See the full list of 195 companies trading below our fair value estimates →
