Telenor (OB:TEL) Q3 Earnings Spotlight Cash Strength And Bangladesh Risk
Share
Listen to the news

Telenor stock closed today at NOK130.0, roughly flat over the past month, while traders weighed a Q3 2026 report that looked far stronger on paper than the muted share reaction suggests. The highlight was profit quality. Adjusted earnings per share came in at NOK2.70 for the quarter, with free cash flow before mergers and acquisitions of NOK4.7b and reported net income lifted by a sizeable gain on the Connection sale.

In the short term, the market barely blinked. Over a multi year lens, investors are looking at a telecom with high recent earnings growth, a 7.7x trailing P/E and a 7.46% dividend yield, alongside forecasts that point to declining profits ahead.

Telenor’s execution story meets the cash test

For the bullish view on Telenor, the crux is whether operational execution and cost work are really compounding into better earnings quality and cash.

"Transformation programs that are structurally reducing OpEx, including FTE reductions and customer service efficiencies, are likely to compound over time, expanding EBITDA margins and supporting a higher, more sustainable free cash flow run rate."

Q3 shows that thesis gaining traction on cash generation. Adjusted EBITDA edged up, while free cash flow before M&A reached NOK4.7b, up 13%. Profit quality looked cleaner too, with adjusted EPS up 45% alongside low leverage at 1.2x. Margin expansion is modest so far, but the cash run rate is moving in the right direction.

Asian pressure points keep the Telenor risk case alive

The bear story hinges on Asia soaking up capital and diluting returns just as Nordic integration and buybacks ask for more balance sheet flexibility.

"Structurally high and potentially rising spectrum costs in Bangladesh combined with historically elevated spectrum pricing relative to global peers may require larger upfront payments at renewal. This could divert capital from growth initiatives and put pressure on free cash flow and net margins."

Q3 free cash flow benefited from working capital timing in Bangladesh that management expects to reverse in Q4. Guidance explicitly excludes potential extra spectrum payments there. That wording keeps the risk live. Any sizeable auction bill would hit cash generation just as spectrum, Nordic M&A outlays of roughly NOK16b, and accelerated buybacks compete for funds.

Hunt For Mispriced Cash Engines

Telenor just showed how a strong cash story can sit alongside a muted share price. The real opportunity sits in finding companies that could be mispriced before expectations adjust.

  • Company 1 - 16% below our estimate - expands complex generics, biosimilars and injectables after building out biologics and API capacity.
  • Company 2 - 43% below our estimate - converts a record backlog of technology-heavy data center and modular construction work into mechanical and electrical service revenue.
  • Company 3 - 26% below our estimate - grows higher value prosthetics and neuro orthotics while consolidating manufacturing and reshaping patient care clinics.
